We were on a cruise in July and there is a daily paper delivered to the cabins.  There is a notice about sunbeds in it.  Also,  on the public address system the same message which was.  No sunbeds can be reserved if staff see books, towels or bags on sunbeds the. items will be removed and will be left at.(then it says the two places they will be left) passengers can go to these places and pick up their belongings.
We thought this was a great idea and should be practiced at Hotels too.

one of the irate guests went down early one morning and dumped all the towels from the saved beds in a big pile by the pool.

Many years ago in Menorca there was an incident known as TowelGate.

Some folks started putting towels out not long after midnight meaning even at 6am there wasn't an "unreserved" sun lounger to be had.

One morning, as the sun slowly rose and bleary eyed holidaymakers started appearing on balconies they were treated to a new form of modern art.

About one hundred brightly coloured towels, all floating in the pool.  The towel ninjas were clever though - a rather objectionable family's towels remained untouched.

Cue much shouting, swearing and finger pointing.

Three times over the next ten days or so the same thing happened.

The culprits were never identified although I do believe after two Scottish families went home the towel drownings ceased   :)
