Title: The beach, also known as an ash tray
Post by: Zorg on September 01, 2010, 11:00:35 AM
Hi

I've just returned from two weeks in Calis. We had lots of fun and really enjoyed our stay, but I have to say the one disappointment was the state of the beach.

Why do so many smokers think their cigarette butts vanish into thin air when they throw them away? They don't - they stay and clutter up the beach, making it look like an ash tray. We only spent one day out of 14 there, and we weren't the only ones to feel this way as other people where we were staying mentioned it.

I wonder if they are any plans to have a clean-up?

"I wonder if they are any plans to have a clean-up?"

They had it in May. There was some talk of extra on the Efes to pay for the beach cleaning. Not sure if that happened (well the extra on the Efes did). Problem is it's council owned so it's their problem really. I'm sure they wouldn't complain if the bars looked after their little bit though.

Totally agree with you.

Welcome to the forum Zorg, an introduction before the complaint would have been good ;)

Only cigarette ends on the beach, hey everybody the beach has been cleaned.:D

This is about Koca Calis, the talk of extra on the price of Efes was from bar and hotel owners in Calis - and wasn't spoken about as a way to raise funds to clean the beach specifically.

I noticed in olu deniz they put pots between the beds for fag ends, if people don't have a choice what can they do?

When we have a day at the beach at Koca Calis usually, we buy a drink in a can and then use the can as an ashtray, making sure we take it with us to dispose of in a bin. It's a no brainer really.

I'd like to know what happens to the money they get from renting out the loungers and sunshades, they certainly don't seem to spend it on the upkeep of the beach.

At the start of the season there were pots on Calis beach.

From the nature of the post I assumed it was Calis not Koca Calis beach being talked about. Anyway most of the beaches in Koca are looked after buy the bar owners and we usually find them pretty good with bins and pots available for cig butts.

Which part of the beach are you talking about Zorg?

I know what you mean, I have never smoked, so to sit on a beach surrounded by cig ends is horrible, I hate it, I put pebbles over them, how sad am I!!  :)

They can pick the fag ends up and take them away when they leave. It is not rocket science. They have a choice; they are just bone idle and inconsiderate. I was on the main beach in Calis yesterday (sorry Keith) by the new wooden seating structure (is there a name for it ?). Within arms reach of my head, there were about 40 fag ends. I flicked them into a bag and put it into a bin when I left.
PS They were not mine - I don't smoke

Its nice to have things made easy for us with bins and ash trays available - but surely people can have a little bag they put all their rubbish in and just take it at the end of their stay to the nearest bin they will surely pass as they leave the beach. Any beach!

This problem is not exclusive to Calis or Koca Calis.

If we all do our bit we keep it nice for everyone. How can we complain if we don't all take a little bit of responsibility for the environment and our surroundings and set a good example in a country where chucking litter on the ground is common place.

It is more noticeable in Calis because the beaches don't get cleaned, in Spain for example, on the larger beaches the tractors are on there every morning cleaning and raking them, can't do this in Calis as it's pebble?
Doesn't put me off Calis though, I just don't go on the beach!  :)

Sadly in Turkey most rubbish just gets left -  look at the verges on the drive between gocek and calis - i have never seen so many bottles tins and general detritus that has obviously been thrown from vehicles. Turkey is a beautiful country but the appreciation to keep  it that way is not embedded in the national psyche.
Yes there is an annual beach clean but no obvious ongoing maintenance apart from the few bars who take responsibility for their section.
The Uk can get pretty bad where all those walkers and cyclists enjoy the countryside and leave evidence of their passing in just the same way..

Im a smoker (I know I know naughty me) and when in Turkey you can always find me at Olu Deniz beach, but I will either have a ashtray (I always ask the beach boys, and they will happily go get you one) and I also have a rubbish bag, so at the end of the day I clear up after myself. Unfortunately not everyone is the same. As Nichola says if we all did our bit, everywhere would be cleaner/nicer.

I saw a team of council workers, on the main Dalaman road near to Gocek, with a wagon and bin bags picking all the rubbish up from the side of the road, as we went past one of the workers finished drinking a bottle of water and threw it on the ground! Maybe hes trying to keep himself in a job   :)

I think the reason they can't use tractors (most of the time) is because of the turtles egg laying.

One man with a grabby thing and a black bag would cost about £200-300 a month for a full time job, which after a few days intense grabbing would give a relatively easy job to keep the beach clean with early daily attention. I take it that Tom's "sorry Keith" implies that I won't hear of anything that suggests that Calis Beach has litter on it. Far from it, I have now given up on the idea of proactively looking after the beach problem Calis has. As usual a place with the name Beach/plaji in it's name is criticised for the state of the beach and the frustration is that we are £10 a day away from exactly that - a clean beach - but people prefer to close their eyes and think it doesn't matter.

I once had customers who commented that although they liked the properties and the prom, they were shocked by the beach (it was right at the end of the season, the worst possible time for looking at the beach). Now the builder of the property they liked was also a man of some influence locally so I took my chance to show him that a few fag butts an efes bottles might not be much in many local minds but it really could actually be enough to lose him a £65,000 sale. Failing to have one litter man would directly affect his bank account - at last I had the situation in understandable terms that would hit HIM in the pocket and hit home on a personal level.

"Take them down the Seril end, it's not so bad down there".

If the solution was to ship in sand from the moon I'd understand, but when you can almost touch the solution is when I just give up with the whole lot of them.

In the sreet where I live there were two sometimes three wheelie rubbish bins outside the wall of the mosque. Now the bins have been moved away from the mosque by less than 50 metres along the road.......the rubbish is now dumped where the bins used to be despite a big sign saying dont!:(

We always keep our ciggie butts in a little pile and take them with the rest of the rubbish when we've finished on the beach.

However, on the walk back to the apartment we pass a number of the big metal wheelie bins and often commented about the rubbish that surrounds them and wonder why people would do that when the bin is right there.  We know the answer now.  We saw the bin men empty the bins one day and if they miss the truck or rubbish falls out of the bin as it's being lifted, then that's where it stays!  (Don't think there's much in the way of job satisfaction there!)

I was smoking on the beach once, and stubbed the fag out in the sand. With that the "Enemy Indoors" went mad and made me pick it up and put it in the bin. Then wouldnt buy me any sweets and sent me to bed early.

I somtimes wonder at the state of some people houses, if they treat the beach in such away, for a nation that likes childern why do so many turkish people be they local or tourist dump rubbish including bottles etc every where, plenty of flags everywhere so they must love their country, but prehaps not their fellow man, or neighbour.
