Title: Getting a landline and ADSL
Post by: Carolyn1957 on July 16, 2011, 16:36:28 PM
Hi all

Could someone advise me of the process/what documentation etc we will need to apply for initially a landline and then internet please?

I know where the Turk Telekom building is - can we just turn up there and if so, what will we need to take? We have our Residency.

Once we have our landline can we apply for internet from the TTNet offices in Fethiye by the dolmus station or do we have to go elsewhere?

We live in Kemer - would or could that make a difference?

Thank you all. I know there is probably advice already on this but knowing how quickly goalposts move around here I thought you could help with the latest procedures.

You will need your residency a copy of your Tapu, drivers licence or other proof of ID. There is a girl who works there speaks good English tel them you want internet as well, but the last one we did for a freind we had to go back after the phone line was done. Usually the next day or sometimes the same day. The internet is done in the same office and they will give you a free modem.
You have to get your own electrian to wire it from the box in your garden to the telephone point in the house, only takes a few minutes.

Ditto - all done in same office. Turk telecom only install the line from the nearest pole and will connect it to the roof somewhere but will not connect it to the telephone box in your villa - only two wires though to connect. Also theres some good offers on for the internet from TTNET at the moment too.

Thank you both - that's great! We've managed on a Turkcell dongle in the past but now we're here full-time I realise how many gbs I guzzle! Must be the Skype video calls to family that's doing it.

We'll have a wander down next week (hopefully) and get it sorted.

Got our phone and internet set up 3 months ago took all of 4 hours from walking into Telecom office to getting the phone working and another 24 hours and the internet was on. Maybe being 100 metres from them helped.
So far the calls and net have been brilliant - so no complaints here.

Carolyn, can I also suggest that when you apply to get TTNet, if you can afford it, get the unlimited download package, as with the cheaper package you only get 4gb download per month, which if you go over can end up costing you more than the unlimited package, especially if you download a lot of films, photos or music. The current unlimited price is 55ytl per month, but well worth it, also you may get this cheaper for a while on one of their deals.

like i said though look at all the options first... As we have the 55tl package and are still getting less than 1 meg download speed most days... Total waste of time for watching Uk tv or downloading anything...

Johnboy we had loads of problems only getting 360kbs when we moved to our new house, we use Smile ADSL, I have no problems with the company they sent people many times but it was the same old story, it is the line not us. They did get Turk Telecom to change it and we now get 1 meg.
The good news is they are now laying high speed fibre optic cables all over the area. I was told by both Smile and Turk Telecom mine will be done in the next month (Turkish time) and I will get 8mb.
We live near the upside down bridge. As I drive round Fethiye area I have seen at least 3 teams laying cables so it will happen one day

As the broadband speed is largely, but not exclusively, driven by how near it is to the local telephone exchange.  Does anyone know where the local exchange/s are located in the Fethiye area.  This would be useful information as it might help some people to understand the speed they are receiving, and the speed those who are looking to take a broadband service will receive.

Good news on the laying of fibre, it will be interesting to see whether they will extend it from the cabinet (or node) near to your home, providing you with a 8 to 15 meg service, to a fibre service direct to your home itself.  In principle this could mean unlimted bandwidth (well into the future anyway) but will almost certainly provide a 40meg speed, both up and downstream. :)

An update -

Firstly, thank you all for your help and advice.

We went along to Turk Telecom yesterday and filled in the forms (or as much as we could) for telephone and internet. The girl we saw was very helpful and filled in the gaps. She didn't want to see our Tapu but did want a tax number as well as the Residency permit and YKN. Something she did ask for that nearly tripped us up was a landline number for a neighbour! She accepted the landline number of an English friend who lives a little way away. She checked the number on computer and then just scribbled it out. She said engineers would bring the phone line to the property tomorrow (today) and internet would be turned on tomorrow. She gave us the modem to bring with us.
Not long after we'd got back home to Kemer yesterday afternoon I had a call on my mobile to say the engineers were on their way. The line was connected to the pole/and into the house mid afternoon.
The electrician we always use came along at 8 am today and connected the telephone and the modem. No charge! The phone line was active immediately. An hour later the internet was on.
I'm still reeling from the shock of such brilliant service - even though we were out of contract with BT we had to pay £60 to get our broadband "turned off" at the exchange and a friend of mine has just been quoted £130 by BT to move a socket from one room to another!

When I was a fresh faced lad working for the Post Office telephones, it used to cost £12 to shift a phone or socket[^]

Although BT has always charged to move cables and sockets etc. BT Openreach now has a license to print money for this type of work, whether they are doing the work for BT Retail or any other Communication Provider(CP).  In most cases the CP doesn't even add anything on to the already high Openreach charge.  And best of it is if the customer moans about the charges, the moaning and complaining is made to the Communication Provider, not Openreach who take the money from the CP and don't even blush!!:-\

Thats good news some things are so easy here, when I said you needed a copy of your Tapu I was not sure if you did, but did't want you to travel all that way and then be asked for it

Can you provide any costs incurred to get this service set up please, it's something I'm considering for September, also is there a minimum contract length, thanks.

That's fine Mark - I'd rather take too much than too little! We took a couple of utility bills and a driving licence for additional photo id, just in case. You never know which way the wind is blowing - tomorrow someone might need all the above plus inside leg measurement!

The one off set up charge is 7.62 TL which will be added to our first bill on 15 August. We had set off with cash expecting to pay installation charges etc so were pleasantly surprised.

We opted for the Advantaj 100 phone option which costs 19.90TL a month, all taxes included. This includes 100 minutes of local and national calls. Calls to GEP phones are charged at 9.3 krs per minute and international calls cost 13.2 krs per minute.

For the internet we have a two yearly contract. For the first year it will cost 39 TL a month for unlimited (reasonable use) downloads. In the second year it goes up to 54.9 TL a month. Plus 2 TL a month for the modem. I am pleasantly surprised at the internet speed here in Kemer.

I am still amazed at the speed and simplicity of it all!

It was a minimum of 2 years for the internet, when I was Karaokemark's "friend" back in April  ;)

The main starter though is having residency, or a very good friend, who is prepared to trust you to pay the bills that are in their name. Afer all, they'll end up either with a visit from the baliffs or a room at the Fethiye "Intercontinental" & not you if you don't cough up  :o

Thanks both, I'm out for an 8 month trial to begin with so will investigate other options, anyone got experience of how well Dongles work in Calis?

Mine works OK in Calis (not as well as Ovacik) but more than OK for average use.  As with all mobiles/dongles try to avoid using inside a concrete and steel building - like most houses in Calis!!  My service provider is Turkcell, and you can pay - I think this is right - 29TL for 4GB usable over a month, or 1GB for 11 TL usable over a week.  The cost of the dongle itself - including sim card - is about 89TL.

I had been using a Turkcell dongle here in Kemer. I think you'll find it costs 39TL for the 4gb top up, I'm not sure about the cost of 1gb. It worked very well and the speed was good but I was getting through the gbs a bit too quickly for my liking!

I used a Vodaphone dongle for the last couple of year - it was OK - very seldom dropped the signal, prices were much as the other replies at around 35-40 Lira a month, speed was fast enough for most things, only downside was when attaching a file to an email - that was mega slow.

Just upgraded mine here in Kemer - i was on a 2mb line but found it was a bit slow as her indoors was watching a live trial from USA so upgraded to the 8mb package. A bit steep but unlimited usage for what i need. Its also UPTO 8 mb line so not had much 8 mb speed seems to peak around 6 mb. Line slows down a lot when all the kids are on gaming down here too.
No worries at all except i did set it up to pay online but it never worked as it wouldnt accept my debit cards for some reason so dont even get a posted bill now so i pop in either a fatura bank or the post office with an old bill and pay that way.

I do so love the informative posts on this forum so, I have a couple of questions:

1.  What happens if you sign for a minimum contract and you decide to return to UK before the period ends?
2.  What happens if you decide to move house before the minimum contract ends - do you have to take out a new contract or simply transfer the service?
3.  With a dongle, is it possible to just use one sporadically or do you need to keep it topped up each month?

Thanks - I know I'll get the right answers from you lot

We signed a 2 year contract with smile adsl and have moved twice, we took our phone munber with us and had no problem.
The contract gave me half price for the first year, after the last move we had a lot of problems loosing the connection. I told them I was going to cancel my contract which they said I could, but gave me a settlement figure, for the 10 months I had at cheap rate I had to pay full rate for.
I got the problem sorted it was not smile it was a fault on the turk telecom line

I was told by the man in our local Turkcell shop that the dongle works along the same lines as a GEP sim card - it will remain open for 9 months, after that time you may have to buy another and start again! I have left our Turkcell dongle unused and not topped up for over six months before now without any problem.

He also said that any credit on there is valid for three months.
