Title: Polenta
Post by: loz on January 15, 2012, 19:52:43 PM
For years I have wanted to have a meal with Polenta but always forgot to buy it.

This time I did buy it, and was a little disappointed.  I tried it fried and microwaved, it is strange stuff.

I will not give up, do members have ways of cooking Polenta?

If you make polenta and let it cool and you can slice it and cook it in a griddle pan, or put cheese on it and pop it under the grill but I have to say the stuff is overrated IMHO

I have Googled but wanted first hand report, tried it with cheese, seasoned it up a bit and still solid baby food! yet I love corn bread.

cous cous love it, I add a vegetable stock cube, season salt and pepper and a few tablespoons of dark soya sauce, add the water and wait, TASTY!!!!

I must agree with my Darling wife re. cous cous, the way that Loz does it totally changes the texture/taste. Fantastic, much prefer it now to rice, as an accompaniment to my world famous Thai Curries !!  :P:P ;)

Would agree with pookie. Kisir or tabbuleh is great, healthy, simple to make and very adaptable to your taste. A fine Turkish bulgar wheat cooked by soaking in hot water for 10/15 minuites. Finely chopped salad tomatoes, cucumber, spring onion or any salad items that take your fancy. Just mix it to your bulger with some good olive oil lemon juice or our favourite is the "Kemal Kukrer" brand Nar Eksisi a pure sour pomegranate juice. Great healthy salad with Prawns, grilled chicken, lamb, beef,or just fill a pitta bread with the salad. Soy sauce/seseme oil and you have a chinese twist, some indian spices, no limit to the twists. Bulger wheat takes in the flavours too.

Ovacik2, that is something I make quite a bit of, usually when I have more time to chop and add, the one I make with Cous cous or bulgar wheat it the fast simple one, based (roughly) on our Turkish neighbours recipe, I forgot to buy Nar sirke to bring back to the UK, luckily found a supply in Tesco, then they stopped it!!!

Since returning to the UK finding a food items enjoyed in Turkey is very hit and miss, I could not find Bulgar wheat in Tesco for a while, so substituted with Cous Cous, near to the pasta etc... Tesco, 2 years on and finally found Bulgar wheat in Tesco, not where I expected it, in the cake baking section???

BTW, the birds enjoyed the Polenta, I will not be trying that again, definitely over rated.

Loz. Holland and Barratt have good inexpensive fine bulgar. "Kemal Kukrer" brand Nar Eksisi a pure sour pomegranate juice. The only ingredient is pomegranate so you can add sweetner or viniger to taste, makes a great Nar Cay too This one we buy in Migros they have offers now and again, BOGOF. Always make sure we bring some back for the winter. We use it with yougurt to marinade lamb, beef chicken the grill or barbi. Fab with ice cream too. Afraid whatever Turkish favourites we cook here are never quite the same. You need to eat outside and have the sunshine. Enjoying the winter in UK but looking forward to May.
