Title: Anti/virus security software
Post by: Karennina on August 03, 2013, 09:33:13 AM
I am after some advice please regarding upping my security for my laptop after receiving a call from my bank to say  someone had tried to make a payment for £1800 to John Lewis and it defo was not me, not sure if it happened online or what but is scary as I always thought to commit "fraud" the fraudsters needed the card obviously not... Anyway some one ages ago recommended Spybot which I have installed but since then I am being inundated with loads of c**p so not sure if I have chosen the right programme, any help greatly received  :)

I think the one good thing is:-  our banks and credit card people always seem to get in touch with us when there is a problem with the card.  I had a call last month that someone was trying to take £1.00 from my account.  I was told this is sometimes a test to see if more money can be taken.  However, it was just a company I had signed up to, making a test payment.
I was really glad my card people where on the ball, as they always seem to be.
I am sure some techy person will give you some advice here Karen, but it just shows how on the ball your card company are to warn you and stop any payment.

yes thankfully they were on the ball, I was so shocked when I got the call as the card nad never left me, the bank told me there was a smaller transaction tried first of all exactly what you just said to see whether they could "get away with it" I am now very concerned about my internet security as I admit I have been a bit lazy with it thinking it would not happen to me, hopefully someone will be able to give me some advice as this new thing I have downloaded is doing my head in but it may be a good thing I am just not sure!!

Ive used Norton 360 premier edition for years Karennina, IMO the best, you have to pay for it but has all the security and antivrus and unlike some of the free ones about, seems  to cover everything, you can get all info you need online and download it if you decide its for you.

I also swear by Norton.
But what makes you think it is a computer problem?
I have regularly had fraudulent transactions over the years on credit cards but they always seem to know what is fraudulent and block them.

Many thanks everyone I shall have a look at the recommendations and try and remove what I have installed as it is doing my head in :(
I don't necessarily think it is a pc problem but I know that I had been lax via my security I do tend to do a lot of online shopping so this has been the wake up call I need to sort out my security... thank goodness the bank were on the ball...  :)

Yes we received our monthly statement from our bank with an entry of £273 for Asda Web direct. As the card is only used for flights etc and used over tel not web nor leaves our premises. We were dismayed as to how this transaction could be made.
We were advised that the card details could be" pulled out of a hat"and used, but my reasoning is where did the goods go to? this the fraud dept replied..oh that's not our dept!!
I'm still not convinced that a data info was not correctly inputted by the bank themselves. Obviously our A/C was credited but you are still left with the upheaval of having to change/cancel cards etc.

I used to have McAfee but, after advice, I switched to Kaspersky which I find very good. £25 from Argos, £40 from Kaspersky. [The advice was that K has relatively little impact on computer space/performance but maintains good security].

I've never heard of that one but if you "goggle" it you should be able to find a security forum out there which will give you an unbiased opinion. As with most things in life "you gets what you pays for". I wouldn't hand on heart recommend any of the free offerings although AVG seems to be the best one of these around. Of the low to mid price range offerings I've used Kapersky and found it to be OK but no better than that. Of the more expensive offerings then I agree with previous posts, Norton is the best one around with AVG 2013 pushing a close second place.

I also agree that anti-virus software may not have prevented this fraud. As soon as you've used a card to make any internet purchase then you opened up the door marked "take a risk", your card details can be caputured anywhere along the electronic "journey" from you to the supplier. The recent spate of frauds involving A2B prove that, I'm sure that some of those people who were stung had Norton installed on their PC's.

You really don't need to pay for security software, there are plenty of very good programs out there. On my WIN 7 laptop I'm just using Microsoft Security Essentials & Firewall, with occasional checks with Bitdefender. On the old XP laptop I have used AVG, Avira and currently using the free version of ZoneAlarm combined firewall & antivirus.

There is a free version of Kaspersky as well. Just be sure to only use trusted sites to download your free software from.

Periodically I use "GRC Shields up" to check that the ports are secure. At the last check both laptops were invisible on the internet to any would be intruders.

Thanks for replies I shall have a look at the free ones, last time I downloaded what I thought was anti-virus it was a nightmare kept getting all these stupid ads and offers everytime I tried to go to a website....
I must confess to having never heard of the GRC Shields up to check that the ports are safe, I am afraid I am not too techy but trying to get more so  ;)

Most firewalls when you first install them will keep giving you pop ups while they "learn" what to allow or block, but anti-virus should just block known viruses and update the installed data base daily. GRC sends test pings to your computer to see if it responds, if it does it gives hackers a way in.

I am trying to get down with the kids and become more techy!I have installed some anti virus on my laptop and I am now having problems with my camera, it will not recognise that there are new photos on my camera that I want to import could this be at all possible that is connected to the anti virus software and therefore is seeing my camera as a possible "alien" item? thanks for any help as always   ;)
Title: Re: Anti/virus security software

Your anti-virus should not see your camera as a threat if you have already installed the software that came with it or have used it previously with no problems. When you connect the camera to your laptop go to "My Computer" and see if the camera is showing as a "drive", if it is you should be able to transfer data from the camera to the hard drive of the laptop.

If you are connecting via Bluetooth you might need to "pair" the laptop and camera again.

Ha  :)I get so frustrated with myself not knowing these things... Today I have got my first mini I/pad and I am baffled as to how I get the e internet symbol on to the desktop, I was rather dismayed not to find an instruction manual in the bottom of the box!! Any tips to do this please?  :-[

What e internet symbol Karen?

If you mean the e logo that is internet explorer, there isn't one - choose Safari which is along the row of icons at the bottom - different browser, same job  :)

Try Youtube Karen - look for iPad beginners guide or similar. Also, if you buy a magazine (there are several for iPad) they are packed with little tips. Always feel free to ask on here too - we all had to learn and trust me there is always something you didn't know  :)

Karen, get yourself a keyboard, to add to the ipad, then you can type and use it like you use a computer or a typewriter.

If you go into iBooks, which should be one of your icons, and search for Ipad user guide, you can download the guide to your Ipad. You want the guide for IOS 7 if you are given an option.

Phil bought me a new one for Christmas, it is lightweight metal and fits the ipad so it looks just like a regular computer. The keys are really positive and I am pleased with it.  There was a deal on Groupon for it.

Instead of using safari for Facebook, download the Facebook app. It's much quicker to use than going thought safari.

How do you actually down load the apps please? I do admit I was originally buying a Kindle Fire and then thought s"d it go for the mini I-pad as I kind of thought it was just like a mini computer, I thought I would just switch it on and there would be the blue e for internet and that would be that!!!I am sure I will get there eventually, but thanks again for all the help and suggestions  :)

You should have an App Store icon on your screen, go into that and search for Facebook then tap on install and it will automatically install onto your home screen. You may need to set up an account if you haven't already done so.

If you have an Apple store near you, sign up for a tutorial, I found them really helpful.  You can do this through www.apple.co.uk

Also, just in case you didn't know (as you mentioned you were going to buy a Kindle Fire) - there is a Kindle App for iPad, just search for Kindle at the App Store and install it, then you can send Kindle books to it. Then you have an iPad and a Kindle all in one  :)

If you let us know what sort of programs interest you, we can recommend some worth getting. Certainly TVCatchup and/or Filmon, both apps turn your iPad into a wee telly :D

You can download books to your computer or laptop then send them to yourself in an email. Open the email on your ipad, and you can open them in either kindle app or iBooks depending on what format they are.

Can anyone recommend a free anti virus for Windows 8?  I used AVG on my previous laptop successfully but it doesn't seem to work the same on Windows 8.  Thanks in advance

No reason why AVG shouldn't work.  Got it running quite successfully on several of a clients laptops.

AVG & Win 8/8.1 (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en_US&urlname=Is-AVG-compatible-with-Windows-8)

Picking up on Panda Anti Virus, all my business customers use it. They do a free cloud anti virus which I install for people who don't want to purchase any AV software. It is currently Number 3 in the download chart on filehippo. I used to install AVG as a free AV, but it kept finding to many 'false positives' and the filesize was huge. Panda is small to download, lightweight on system resources and pretty simple to use.

I would reocmmend using this, and once every few weeks running a scan with malwarebytes, again, you can get a free version of this.

You can get Panda, paid or free version from  www.cloudantivirus.com (http://www.cloudantivirus.com)
