Title: Annual travel insurance
Post by: yakamoz on April 06, 2014, 13:31:40 PM
Hi can anyone recommend annual travel insurance for couple (one over 70 with medical issues). Want to be able to be in Turkey for 42 days at any one time.

Many thanks for any helpful advice.

Aged over 70 and 42 day trip duration on an annual policy is very difficult with pre-existing medical  conditions. I know because I have pretty much exhausted all avenues. Try getmy.com but you are going to pay. I now find the only cover for hubby is a 1 trip policy and payingtoomuch.com is the cheapest.

I have annual insurance from Staysure, but with medical conditions declared the maximum stay is 31 days. It may be that you'll need to buy single trip policies to cover each visit. A problem with sussing out travel insurance companies is that just about every review you read only covers two issues: the ease of using the website; and what the price is. Neither is of crucial importance to me. What matter is whether or not they look after you when you are ill or injured abroad. If they aren't any good at this, or have a record of finding tiny-print quibbles not to pay out, you might just as well travel without insurance. Staysure coughed up for a ten day stay in a private hospital in Marmaris, flew a doctor out from the UK and gave me escorted medical repatriation - ambulance to Dalaman, business class flight to London via Istanbul, ambulance to Bristol. No quibbles at all and they were willing to insure me the next year! Mind you our annual insurance is £460 - of which Hilary's share is probably £25/£30.

Insurancewith.com

When we were looking for Insurance for Jean last September (heart problems + cancer) we were getting silly quotes of between £1,000 and £2,000 for a two week trip and that was from the the ones that didn't point blank refuse to insure her. We got a quote from Insurancewith for £350. The excess is high at £700 but that's the risk you take to get a cheaper policy. For us the choice was to pay £350 or not have a holiday so it was a no-brainer really.

We are with Liverpool Victoria and have a premier annual multi trip policy.
This entitles us to 90days cover per trip.
What is important is that it includes cover for: Europe including TURKEY and Egypt although I would certainly check for Egypt!!which has erupted since our policy started last year.
Another option would be to contact Avanti which previously did not cover for over 70s however when we advise that we had taken alternative cover because of this issue they did say that they could review this issue. Their cover was for 60days.

we have a joint nationwide flexi account which gives us free yearly  travel insurance BUT,,, due to my Big C / Spinal problems and now a major knee problem [ im on crutches ] and my wifes non repairable shoulder tendon snapp , we declared these medical problems and have to pay only £110 extra for up to 60 days with a only  £150 excess via UK Insurance  who nationwide use,
A brilliant deal .

I always use this compare site for travel insurance with pre-existing conditions,  and before purchasing get Gordon to check the PDF for terms and conditions, as Colwyn states, cheapest not always the best option.

I have pre-conditions (being excessively and dangerously funny is one) and I got a great deal from American Express. So much so that (much against the grain for me) when the auto renewal letter comes through I just pay it - it's always the same or just a few pounds more than last year.

This topic has made me think though - it's all about the cover when you need it and you certainly can't beat the service provided to Colwyn in his time of need.

Have a look at https://www.columbusdirect.com

Also see http://www.over80.co.uk/travel-insurance.htm

We were quoted £1800 for a six month stay in Turkey for over 80's.

Many thanks for all your help and suggestions.

Flexicover seems very expensive. Most would only give cover up to 31 days. American Express appear to be best at the moment - cover medical conditions and allow trip duration up to 50 days.

Thanks again.
