So I see  ;D.

Billie Holiday recorded a song called Strange Fruit and this bush is in the garden of David Holiday (my neighbour and Buddy on 'ere) and I was on holiday when I took the photograph. Spoooky eh?

Yes that is. I think the five sided one is a quince, so that must be a quartz.

Pumes - nargh - quinceses, quinciiquonce are much bigger , about the size of a large lemon and they are knobbly. Imagine one of Scunner's knees, paint it yellow and that's what a quince looks like. Unless of course there are varieties of quince and this is a micro smooth variety then I may stand corrected  :D

It's nothing like a quince and neither do the leaves look anything like quince tree leaves.

Could it be a quince in it's early stages (I'm being serious now  :) )
Title: Re: Does anyone know the name of this fruit?
Post by: SteveJ on September 10, 2014, 22:22:18 PM
but as KKOB correctly points out  (ouch that hurts) the leaves are not like those of the quince and they wouldn't change.

still here then  ;D

Not Star Fruits either Steve, when the fruits weren't picked they turned black but remained in the same shape as the green ones. You can see a black one on the left of one of the first pictures. Star Fruits are much more angular (and star shaped)

and the prize goes to......

Buddy - if you are reading this thread do not go anywhere near this tree - it's not called a Be Still tree for nothing, it's extremely poisonous.

It's at the end of your terrace. We should consider getting it professionally removed.  :(

I've read a little more about this plant and I'm convinced that we have been lucky to identify it before some little kids got chewing on the "funny shaped apples" - Thanks Steve.

A little more worrying is that one of the sites which discussed the increase in suicides attributable to the deliberate ingestion of the seeds (from zero to 173 in a single year in Sri Lanka - all young pregnant women) had an advert at the bottom where you could buy one of these buggers. Go Figure!

If you are going to get rid of it, make sure you wear gloves. All Oleanders are poisonous and you can get a severe reaction just from getting the sap on your skin. Also be careful of where you dispose of it.

Thanks KKOB but did you miss the bit where I suggested that we employed professionals?  ???

Yes - we have a contact at the Forestry Commission who will sort it out for us.

It would have been more pleasing if it was a squapple or even a quintile, but never mind, hope you get shot of it without any problems.
While are on does anyone know what this hairy apples are,I've heard them called custard apples but know little about them

We have  three of these in our garden, bought them in the garden centre because we liked the little yellow flowers.  We have also seen them with orange flowers.  We bought the first one about six years ago to shade the patio.

Jacqui - as long as you are aware of the dangers of the sap and seeds and there are no unsupervised little ones around to sample the fruits then you should be ok. Personally I'm not prepared to take the risk and the bugger is coming out, it's not called the Suicide Tree for nothing.

Thanks for that information SteveJ, I'll get it sorted when I'm out next month.
