Hi All,
Been digging through this forum but am a bit confused as to the situation with mobiles and hoping someone can give me a clear answer.
The situation is we've recently bought a holiday home in Calis and I have bought a dual-sim mobile to use here in the UK with my current company and also get a PAYG sim with voice/data when we come over at the end of the month.
I'm reading lots about registering a foreign phone but this seems to apply to those of you with residency. So, my question is do I need to do anything short as far as registering is concerned when not a resident and being over for periods of less than 60 days?
TIA

If you want to use a Turkish SIM in your phone you WILL need to register it.
If you're just going to continue using your UK SIMs, there's no need to register.
-
Thanks KKOB,
Wasn't sure if the 60 day period to register was for if you were there for over 60 days. Thanks for confirming, even if it does mean laying out more money!!! :-\
-
You need to register it within 60 days of arrival. If you don't register the phone it could still continue to work for a few hours, days or even weeks but there's no guarantee.
-
Within 30 days of arrival, not 60.

Above is a link to changes regarding registering a foreign mobile. You now have 60 days from entering Turkey to register a mobile instead of 30 days. Communicaion Law No 5809.

Does that mean it will not get blocked by the phone companies for 60 days?
I would not risk it. I had one blocked a few years ago after about 6-7 days.
-
As you will be on holiday, why not leave your U.K. phone in the U.K. , & buy a cheap Turkish phone whilst in Turkey ?? Simples !!

No. It means that you have to register it within 60 days of entry into Turkey otherwise they won't accept it.
As I said previously, an unregistered phone could be blocked within anything between a couple of minutes and a couple of months.
-
Do you mean 60 days from when you put your turkish sim into your new phone as the turks won't know you have brought a new phone here
if it's still got an English sim in it ??

They know as soon as you connect to the network.
In addition, they've got a special "ingilizce yabancı filtresi" which can tell if it is an "English" SIM - apparantly Scottish (or Welsh & NI) ones are fine.

As we have a holiday home in Calis. We bought a chieap Turkish mobile and when we go home we leave it with our maintenance company who keep it registered for us.
-
So if i use my English phone in Turkey with a tesco sim in it the turks will stop me using it after whatever time up to 60 days
only i need to keep my uk account active by switching it on and i use it for internet etc. aiso when i am in uk mt turkish phone
works does our country do the same to Turkish mobiles i wonder ?
-
Ivan, only a non registered device with a Turkish sim will be blocked., basically because the Turkish government tax mobile devices so any device being brought in is required to be registered and tax paid As Jacqui recommends, best bet is to buy a second hand Turkish mobile for use in Turkey.
-
Ivan, before you use your Tesco sim in Turkey check the data and call costs as it is not European roaming and can be very expensive!
-
The Tesco person told me as long as i switch mobile on (i do not need to use it) they won't cut me off cause when i went back
at xmas old sim no good so lost 10 pounds of credit. thanks for help Ivan
