Title: Armenian Genocide Denial
Post by: Colwyn on January 27, 2017, 16:34:43 PM
The French Constitutional Court has ruled the law making it a crime in France, punishable by up to a year's imprisonment, is an "unnecessary and disproportionate attack against freedom of speech" and so has rescinded the law labelling denial as a hate crime. For those unfamiliar with the history of this, there were mass deaths of Armenians living in Eastern Anatolia in 1915 during the World War. According to many Armenian groups this was a genocide of the Armenian people (similar to the Nazi genocide of Jews). According to successive Turkish governments it was the result of armed Armenian groups siding with Russian invaders and fighting against Ottoman forces. In the following harsh relocation of Armenians eastwards there are many deaths which Turkish governments has characterized as one of the tragic outcomes of war - but not genocide. Now the French court has decided that it will no longer be a crime to support the Turkish government interpretation of event.
