My friend as just sold his apartment and he was thinking of taking the sterling home with him as he doesnt do internet banking.
Is there a limit of how much sterling he can take back to the uk?

Travelling anywhere in Europe is risky with more than the equivalent of 10,000 Euros from a non-EU source.
He'll need to declare it and provide proof of the source of the cash.

And as if that wasn’t enough, it is possible he might have it seized at Dalaman and have to prove it is his and not ill gotten later in a Turkish court.
Advise your friend to find an electronic way as walking out of Turkey and into the EU with a holdall full of banknotes is a risky thing to do.

Thanks for your replies.
Its exaclty what i thought and told him yesterday.
I will be seeing him today so will have a word.
I am pretty sure garanti bank in fethiye would transfer it for him.
At a charge of course.

Travelling anywhere with a large amount of cash is foolhardy, whatever charge Garanti make would be worth it - and Keith makes a really good point, its Dalaman that would be the issue, not the entry into the UK. The UK authorities would likely accept the supporting documentation from the sale, whereas the Turkish authorities at Dalaman may require further paperwork that he may not have.

I have a friend The Reverend, Barrister, Doctor, Major-General Michael Mguto who would be happy to help your friend. Ask him if he wants his contact details. ;)

I know somebody who did exactly this. He was taken off the plane at Dalaman, the money confiscated and the last time I spoke to him, about a year ago, he still hadn’t got it back. This happened over 10 years ago!
