There's a plant that grows like pampas grass (almost) and has leaves looking similar to an umbrella with no material (if you follow), It grows about 4 to 5 ft high in ground, not sure about in a pot as it likes its feet wet..... http://msucares.com/news/print/sgnews/sg03/sg030623.html  Can give you a bit if you'd like.

Why not try and find an old worn out fishing umbrella,then you won't have to bother watering it, and it will survive all year. ;)

I have planted a few things now, so may see how I get on with theses, if not will let you know. I like the look of the plant so may try it in another pot, many thanks.

Just got some seeds sprouting i had sent from Ireland - Blackthorn = hedging = sloes = sloe gin!
and some Elderberry too but only two sprouted so far. May have some spare once they get going a bit.

You could put lines between the tubs or trellis and grow wisteria which is quick growing  or climbing roses which also climb quickly also plumbago which is really pretty with blue flowers
