renting out your property in Turkey
« on: May 13, 2012, 00:29:44 AM »
does anyone know the legalities associated with renting out your Turkish property. It seems many British owners do this, when they are not using their homes themselves, but I've been told (by my Turkish neighbour) that its illegal!
Maybe there are some legal processes one must follow?
I'd like to know:

Is the income taxable? In UK or Turkey? Does it make a difference if the arrangement is made in UK or in Turkey?

Does the owner have to register the arrangement anywhere? eg a government office
Does the owner have to copy visitors/renters passports, like at hotels and register these somewhere?

Any other useful info welcome!

It is not illegal to rent out your property.

Income is taxable, but only in one country, you can choose which

You do not have to Register  and you do not need passport copies of any visitors

As Rimms has said it's not illegal. If you go to the following you can download a guidebook.

Sorry but this is incorrect "Income is taxable, but only in one country, you can choose which"

Income is taxable in Turkey if you exceed the "personla allowance".    It is also taxable in the UK (after deducting expenses etc.)  If you have paid tax in Turkey you can off-set that against any tax you have to pay in the UK,

You need to be careful as apart from monitoring "holiday property to let sites" the Mugla Province Tax are visiting areas and checking. Last year they appeared in our village with a list of all yabanci properties and where there was someone in checked their names against the list and where different quizzed as to whether they were renting and how much paid etc..
