Paying Car Tax for the First Time
« on: July 26, 2015, 21:13:22 PM »
As I understand it we need to pay our car tax at the end of this month.....it's the first time we'll have done it as we got the car - well, I say 'car', it should be bloody great truck  ;D - in February.

Can any of you seasoned car owners tell me where I go/what I do/what I need to take.....?

Ta muchly.   :)

Go to the tax office, that's the big building across the road from Matisse.
Go in the left hand door (closed at 12-1 usually, for lunch)  ;)
Normally you get a ticket from the machine by the left hand desk but it hasn't worked for over a year.
Queue up at the booth on the other side of the room.
Go to the man on the left 1st, give him your Ruhsat.
He types details in, gives you the Ruhsat.
You then feed your way to the guy on the right.
He tells you how much to pay, cash only!
You pay, he gives you a receipt, you leave.

A little tip, the Turks always leave it until the last day of the month to pay, so to avoid the big queues, go before the last day and always best to go early morning - 9-9.30 if possible.

It's easy once you know   ;) 8)

It's an exciting time because it's when you find out for the first time that you've been clocked in a speed or trafficlight camera. They add the fine to your tax and if you don't or can't pay they'll impound your vehicle. That's why there are Polis and recovery veihicles posted outside the maliye offices at the end of July and January.

Just go on your online bank look under payments, then taxes you will need to put reg. Number in, it will tell you if you have any fines, then just pay, much easier than going to the tax office. You can then print a reciept.

Ooh, options....like it!
Will try the online option first and see what happens.

KKOB, someone mentioned to me a few days ago that this was when we would find out about speeding fines etc. If I end up going in person I will have to take a bit of extra cash as I'm expecting a few....especially as our knackered old Landy is apparently officially considered a minibus so speed limits are lower than for 'normal' cars!  :-[  : :)  :-[

I was at the Maliye a few years ago when a boy racer went to pay his tax and foundout that he had over 2500TL in fines for speeding and jumping red lights. He ended up handing his car over to the Trafik Polis.

Happy Days.  ;)

Easiest option is to pay it online via your bank. Make sure you print off a receipt to put with your car docs.

Absolute doddle, have just paid online via Garanti site, receipt saved & printed.

No speeding fines.....as Mr WB said, it would have been quite ironic if we'd had any as our beast is one of the slowest vehicles around....certainly when it comes to going up hills!  ;D
