Title: Freedom at last
Post by: tel on May 08, 2006, 22:36:49 PM
Well at last we are free, well May 19th at least.
The house sale has gone through and after 22 years we leave the U.K. house to take up residence in Koca Calis.
Some members book a one way flight but, we actually cancelled our May flight to use the money on travelling overland, as the house sale was nearing completion. We have planned a slow sight seeing trip, taking in about 12 countries.  Making for Amsterdam and then south to Venice, through Croatia and the Dalmation coast, around the corner to Greece and crossing at Ipsala into Turkey.  After Galipoli we take
the ferry over to Canakkale and down the Agean coast before making to Calis.
Hopefully taking out residency to allow us to stay as long as the car is permitted to stay (180 days).  Before returning to the U.K. via the ferry to Italy at the end of the year.
I have the green card, Int.driving license, breakdown & travel insurance, long passports, first aid kit, warning triangle, and a fire extinguisher, so I hope I have covered it all....LOL
Why are they returning to the U.K., well I am so excited, as I love to travel, so I will blab.......it's to pick up a cruise and guess what.....it stops at Istanbul and Kusadasi, amongst the itinerary.
Living the dream I call it, I'm sure I'm not alone huh?
Well that's the cunning plan, let's hope it goes to plan.
Tel   :)
Any tips, welcome...cheers

Congratulations Tel
You kept that quiet. Sounds luvverly, you lucky beggers.
Have a safe & wonderful journey. Keep logging on to let us know how it goes.
How slow is slow? 2-3 months?
Let us all know the pleasures & pitfalls. Hope there are plenty of the former & none of the latter.
We will get there, we will get there, we will get there (where's the infinity button?) eventually.

Nice one Tel! Let me know your KC address and I'll pop round for an Efes in Sept. I don't think you will be there in June when we go to our place on Saglik.

Take care.

Stoop

ps - maybe one of those tyre inflating kits would be a good thing to take. Just in case you have a puncture in a remote area. I think they are canister type thingy's that allow you to 're-inflate' the tyre and drive for about 100 miles or so.

Good luck mate!

Don't take too long travelling, I seem to recall you owe me a drink!

Safe journey.

Thank you for all your nice comments.
This escape plan started in 2003, (with great help from Keith((Scunner)) so that's how long it has taken to get to this point...LOL
I did see the tyre inflater Stoop the other day and thought maybe, so may well add that chum...cheers.
Yes we will be keeping a diary and logging all, if Amanda Lamb doesn't get in the way......only joking...LOL
I have bought a wi-fi Notebook to use, if I can master it and a gadget to find hot spots.
There is a little more to it I think, as it found a hot spot near PC World, connected okay, but I could not access anything..LOL    Early days  ha ha
Keep any tips coming!
Roll on next week.

Just a quickie,
Leaving Venice today after a couple of lovely days seeing the sights and doing the boat trip etc in glorious weather.  St Marks Sq crowded as always  LOL   Drove straight thru Austria, raining and snow and sleet flurries in the mountains  1°.  Stuttgart wonderful, well worth a visit.
About halfway now and enjoying every minute, kept off the toll roads in Italy mainly and it was lovely.  6 countries to dat.  Off to Croatia in a minute.  Nationwide closed my card, thought it was fraudulent use, just rang them to get it sorted...LOL
Calis mid June at the latest

PS hello to Roy, Carol-n-Pete, Crabbit(saw Italys match last night) and everyone else

Yes two more nights here and Sunday is the day to arrive home.
What a fantastic view here we have..to die for it looks right along the beach and Marmaris across the bay. as we are actually in Icmeler where we wanted to revisit....our last stop
One bonus driving is that you can go to the best spot for your hotel and see for yourself the location before parting with your cash...lovely.  Negotiated a reduction of 20ytl a night also
Its been an experience never to forget but I must add...not for the faint hearted   LOL

Tel - I hope you'll let us all have a FULL description of your trip when you've finally had time to settle in. Sounds wonderful but let us have all the joys & pitfalls. Should you have taken more time or less on the drive.
Making me feel like doing this too. Did you drive in left or right hand drive car?
Can't wait until you put in a full report.
Good luck in your new life

Hi again. from an internet cafe in Calis
Just a few quickies answered....normal right hand drive car used...Toyota Corolla with acon.
3500 miles driven averaging 38.5 mpg.  Good navigator required and my wife turned out be dam good  LOL
Some roads not always continued with directions but yes okay on auto routes etc.  A few crazy drivers in Greece.
Weather ranged from 1degree high up in Austria to 37 degrees near Icmeler.  Even hotter here now.
Some garages not quite ready to sell petrol although new on the Cannakale route down. always keep topping up is a good idea.  Holland quite hectic driving and like nearly all motorways.  Advice in Amssterdam and Venice is stop outside somewhere and get the train in.  A great experience.
But more later and you will probably doing a more direct route.  Just over three weeks just right for us.
Didnt see Dave or Gordon at Koycachiez last Sunday and didnt have their phone numbers  LOL
All for now. dealing with residency and banking now.
Tel
All borders no probs

Hi,
On way back to the Uk now, with the car, which will be sold when we finish with it there.
After moving to Turkey this year, we are now in phase two LOL.
Left Cesme a little later than scheduled on the ferry and had a lovely time on board for three days. Food excellent and comfortable beds in cabin with duvet.  Arrived in Ancona with rain after some sunny periods on voyage.
Left port around 630pm to drive to Rimini, where we stayed the first night. Visited San Marino (worth a look indeed) yesterday.
Today we left Italy and are in Switzerland, where at last it has stopped raining once more.  Tunnels so long...21kilometres etc
Temperature reached 35degrees in the tunnel. Breathtaking scenery now.
Ytl to Euros, now Swiss francs  LOL   Everywhere taking Euros and given in change also...mainly
Plenty of cheap wine everywhere, fantastic
Best wishes Calis Beachers

Hi again,
Back safely in dear ole Blighty after crossing 0015 Friday night. Topped up everything at Calais and customs virtually non existant at Dover. B&B at Ashford for a decent kip and on to Pompey (Pompey-3, Reading 1) Leapt back above the Gooners DAVE..LOL
Down to Plymouth now where after arriving the last 20 miles in rain, it has now turned sunny and warm 19 degrees.
Anyone thinking of driving out, then all I can say is go for it, take your time and enjoy a wonderful experience.
We shall return by plane to our home though after the cruise and xmas is out of the way.
Wishing you all the very best
