Title: What's this please?
Post by: Bluwise on September 12, 2015, 12:59:07 PM

This is growing on a vine type plant next to our terrace.  Just wondered what it is and if it's safe?  Large orange/yellow pods with purple/red seeds inside.

Difficult to be sure from the picture. It looks like a bitter gourd ( gohya ) that's either split open because of the heat or it's been eaten by insects.

Put 'gourd images' into Google and you might see something similar.

Thanks for the suggestions - I think it is  bitter melon (gourd) but don't think I'll be trying it - despite the zillions of health benefits claimed.  :)

Karela - a bitter gourd used in Indian recipes is very similar but only seen green ones before. Like a very knobbly cucumber.

They are very bitter but pretty awesome cooked with spices. A personal favourite dish.
