Title: I've decided to buy a car !
Post by: Susiepink on August 06, 2014, 17:15:15 PM
I have been looking for a while and it seems apparent that for £5000 or £6000, forgive me for talking in pounds, I can only get a banger, that I would probably get for under a grand back in UK. That leads me to have a look at new ones. Has anybody any ideas, recommendations or experience of purchasing a new car here in Turkey? What should I expect to pay for a small economical runaround ? Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

We have a new Citroen which we are happy with, the guy speaks very good English have a word with liz101 she has the small Citroen looks like a good little run around. We have many friends who have purchased from the Citroen garage no problems. Anew Nemo would be about 40,000tl

Suzie if you can afford it, I think I'd go for a new one, if old bangers fetch a good amount, logically it must indicate that a new car will hold it's value and you should get a good price IF you ever want to sell it.  ;)

Yes, unfortunately new cars and second hand are expensive here. We bought new in Dec 2008, got a 2009 model Suzuki Swift, 1.3 which at the time (exchange rate about 2.5 TL/£) cost us 23,500 TL. We had to go to Denizli to fetch it. Would have cost at least £2K less in the UK. We were offered 20K TL when it was 5 years old so they do hold their value better as well.

It would indeed be sensible to consider a new or nearly new car with a long term view on residual value. If as you say you are looking for a run around I would advise that diesels are now not suited to short runs. As others have mentioned, Citroen / Peugeot have a good range of small petrol driven models. Check out at the time of purchase what service menus are on offer. Happy shopping !

We've just purchased a Renault Clio Joy 1.2 costing 38800TL including plates and 6 months road tax. It's a very stylish car including MP3 connectivity, Air Con etc. Good Customer service from Renault dealer opposite Kipa ask for Demir or Sinem

Thanks for these replies, very helpful. So, I can buy an old banger for about 18000tl, or a brand now car for around double that, give or take. It's a no brainer really, I shall try and get myself around the dealerships in the next few days. When I go into the dealership is the price the price, or do I need my bartering head on ? (I hate bartering, I would much rather be told a price and that's it!)

Susiepink, when we bought ours we got 1,500TL knocked off plus they fitted rear sensors as an extra gift. It was our Turkish neighbour who advised us to buy at the end of the year as they are keen to make their sales figures, so are willing to negotiate a bit.
Our neighbour also came to Denizli with us on the bus and drove the car back for us.

I bought my Citroen C1 new in December 2011. Before I left home, I printed the list price from the Turkish Citroen website. The Sales Manager, Hamdi, as said speaks very good English & is actually the owner's son. The price he gave me was almost 3,000tl less than the list price, so no place to go on the negotiation front. It's great around the area & does get a few longer outings, but is a little under powered when it has a full load on steepish hills. Other than that (touch wood) it hasn't been a scrap of trouble

Thanks Liz, I did go and see Hamdi but they don't do the C1 any more. You do need a bit of power when you've got passengers !

Have to agree with Mark & Liz, we bought a new Citroen Berlingo from the dealership on Baris Manco and are delighted with the car and the after sales service we have received. The showroom price is a guide, they will discount the advertised price but don't expect 20%.

Susiepink, did you buy a car in the end?
We have decided to go the same route and buy too, so I'm interested to know about the experience of one who's gone before us!   :)

Hi
Yes I bought a Honda i20 from the dealership up by Yaniklar, I've had it 6 months now. It cost me 40,000tl, and its ok, its great to have transport. I'm a bit disappointed in both the economy and the performance, it does about 37 miles to the gallon on average, ( can't do metric) the handbook promised between 43 and 63. Its no big hits to drive, if I had spent that kind of money in the UK I would have expected a lot more for my money! To be honest I have never had a new car before, I used to spend 3 or 4 grand at home and be delighted, but unfortunately you would be lucky to find a decent car here for that kind of money. I didn't test drive any other cars before I bought as I didn't have the transport to get me around all the dealerships, with hindsight I should have hired a car for the day and got myself around them all and took more time in choosing. I had a terrible knee problem at the time and was struggling to get around, hence the desperate need for transport.
Hope this helps Wordbird x

37 mpg is pretty good. You don't want to take much notice of the mpg's claimed by manufacturers as they're tested under very special conditions, not "normal" driving. The best figures are obtained by sustained motorway-type driving over long distances, on the flat using cruise control. You've got no chance of that around the Fethiye area.

 ;D ;D

Thank you, that's helpful (though sorry you're not thrilled with it!).

I've been keeping an eye out for second-hand but seen nothing that fits yet so trekking round the dealers is our next move.
We've hired for the winter and it's been invaluable - would find it hard to be without now. Summer wasn't too bad but relying on one dolmuş an hour now that might stop if the weather is bad, not many people are using it or there's a letter 't' in the day makes life out of town too difficult!

Well as you know, WordBird, we have the Qashqai which we bought new from the Nissan dealership on the D400.

Their after sales service has been excellent - sorting out the worn brake discs (the hills! the hills!) for 30 lira and fully valeting the car in that price.

We are thinking of trading it in for a newer model this summer (been told this is the best time to part exchange) just so that we can ensure reliability and before it starts to cost more. But we'll see what we can get for it at the dealership before we make up our mind for sure.

But like Susiepink, we didn't shop around. We've always favoured Nissan before, so went for what we knew, I suppose.

Not had any issues with the Qashqai. The high chassis means it can easily navigate the tracks that pretend to be roads here in Ovacik. No issues at all climbing the substantial hills even with a full load.

Happy car shopping!

We bought a second-hand Nissan Countryman from Kocatepe Nissan many years ago, before they moved out to their new site, and always had excellent service and help from them. Even when it went for the smallest of recalls, adjustments or repairs it was always given a free valet inside and out.

What Mr WB really wants is an old Land Rover like the short wheelbase 90 we had a few years ago.
I've vetoed this - don't even know if you can get them over here, but if you can I imagine they'd be astronomical to buy and even though he could do a lot of the maintenance himself, parts would cost a bomb.
Our past few cars in the UK have been Mazdas but again I think I've seen about two since we've been here and I bet they'd be too expensive.

I'd doubt that you'd be able to find an SWB Landy for sale in SW Turkey. You'll sometimes find a LWB for sale from one of the jeep safari companies but they're pretty well knack**** by the time they let them go.

I had a County 110 foe many years in Turkey which was excellent as we used to help the local Belidiya with fire fighting during the season. That was also when petrol was cheap.

You will find many of these for sale and the 90 / short wheel base available. There are many specialist dealers of l
Land Rovers over here. Most have had the engines changed to diesel (Lorry Type) They are exceptionally easy to maintain and all parts are available in Turkey.

Ooh. Interesting, Jackstee, thank you.
I did love the old Landy.....and it'd be great for the tracks and the hills.....
That said, the fuel consumption was eye-watering and I'm not sure how confident I'd be wielding it around Fethiye. Used to feel pretty much invincible in ours but I don't want to squash anyone!
