Our House Insurance Company "Policy Expert" has changed it's terms and conditions. The rules now state that you must turn off your water at the stop cock if you are going away from the house for more than 14 days. This is even if you have someone coming in to check the house out.
So, to anyone who has a policy from them, best to be aware of this. Phil read it in the terms and conditions when our renewal arrived today.
Wondering is it worth shopping around? :-\

Surely you would do that anyway?

I remember my Dad's Prudential Household policy had that as one of it's conditions over 40 years ago.

Same with my dad's Liverpool Victoria policy. The guy arrived every Thursday evening for all of my life there.

We were so poor we couldn't afford insurance, we just had to live careful. :'( :'(

When we cleared our parent's things, my brother, sister and I found penny policies in our names. Not sure what the cover was, but certainly gave us a feeling of security to know that we were covered! :)

My son who is a Plumber calls up every day when we are away. My D.I.L also uses our fields for her horses, so needs to use the water. She also waters my plants. Also, the policy used to say it was O.K. To leave the place for 28 days, now it has changed. There was never a mention before about turning off the water.
Would be interesting to know just how many people turn off their water before they go on holiday.
-
I do!
-
We don't
-
Patrice, better check your House Insurance before you take your next holiday.
Forgot to say, if you have gas (we don't) you have to turn that off too.
-
Accident waiting to happen!
-
I don't turn ours off.
I don't see the point really especially the part that you can go for up to 14 days without turning it off. You only need a small leak for a couple of hours and it can cause untold damage.
Leave well alone I say.

Thanks Jackie We will :-\

So if you go away in the winter and have to turn your gas and central heating off will they pay for any burst pipes? I know the water will be off but I guess they don't insist you drain the tanks down? There will still be water in the pipes unless you drain everything off.

You'd be better turning it off before flooding the house

Just a tip, always check your pipes in the loft are lagged properly. In the winter my son was called out to a to a property with a burst pipe, the water was dripping through the ceiling. When he went into the loft, there was no lagging on the pipes at all. This is really unusual, but shows it can happen.
