On this day in 1707, the Acts of Union was passed, merging both Kingdoms of Scotland and England into one United Kingdom, by the name of Great Britain.
The historian Simon Schama said: "What began as a hostile merger, would end in a full partnership in the most powerful going concern in the world ... it was one of the most astonishing transformations in European history."

The government are doing their best to make sure it doesn't become "interesting" with an extremely heavy Polis presence. Taksim been closed off since yesterday, although it hasn't stopped a few hardy souls trying to unfurl banners etc. Needless to say they have all been arrested.

A few folks had a bit of trouble getting to the office today (our office is just off Taksim, opposite Gezi Park) with road blocks and such like, but to be honest it's the same every year.

There's going to be a "rally" in Trafalgar Square this afternoon and no doubt the "Great Unwashed" will be looking for some action.

All managed to get a bit "interesting" despite best efforts to suppress marchers, rubber bullets and water cannons used in more than one district of Istanbul.
All in all, its been quieter than a few folk were forecasting - lets hope it stays that way as we don't want a repeat of 1977.
