Steer Clear of this Beko Shop
« on: October 05, 2006, 07:19:24 AM »
Last week we decided to buy a television/dvd combo.   Our Turkish insurance man/friend took us into the main Beko shop in Fethiye, where we chose the model we wanted.   We were shown the official Beko printed price list with the basic price of YTL 515.  However, this was discounted to YTL 455.   Unfortunately, they did not have the particular model in stock and, although they were happy to order one for us, we did not have enough time left.

So, we walked to the nearest small Beko shop - Korfez.   Turn left from the main Beko shop, and it is on the right-hand side of the one-way system.

The television we wanted was on display so, armed with the price list and the discounted price already quoted, our Turkish friend started to negotiate.   Eventually, the shopkeeper agreed the same price and we arranged for delivery.

As we left the shop, our friend told us that he had not wanted us to buy from there as they were "bad people".  They had apparently asked him why he was being kind to us in arranging a discount, especially as we were not paying him any commission.   They also suggested that he should persuade us to buy at a higher price so that they could split the difference with him.   They said that they had sold the same set to an English couple that morning for £50 more (even more than the list price!).

Moral of the story:  steer clear of Korfez, and always ask to look at the official price list!

I have to agree, you do need to shop around. We wanted a new cooker, hob and extractor and we bought from the Beko shop on the right as you enter Fethiye just before the PTT. They were helpful, showed us the price list (witch matched the official website)and discounted the goods by 20% and fitted them the same day. Excellent by Turkish standards.

Regaring price lists. Several years ago we discovered a weeze of being shown a price list,  staff pointing to the far right column as the full price to pay. Courtesy of our little electronic translator we found out that this column was the price plus a huge interest charged on it for a five year credit plan! The cash price was the left hand column and  all the others were for various credit payment plans! We found Arceliks website very good  and their Fethiye shop as well.
