I paid six lira for a water melon in the Friday market, saw one that night for 99 kurus in the Bim. I think that I will forget shopping for fruit and veg in the markets as I always seem to get it wrong!!!

My cousin once got charged 20 lira for a water melon at the market!!! So I don't think you are doing too badly. Maybe the one in Bim was 99 kuruş per kilo anyway, as that does seem exceptionally cheap for a water melon.

Definitely a per kilo price !

You'll very rarely find water melons priced as an item.

AS KKOB says melons are usually priced by the kilo, also like all other fuit and veg here when they first appear in the shops and markets they start quite expensive but become much cheaper the futher you get into their growing season.

If you are shopping for fruit or veg in the market, either go to a stall with the prices displayed or hang back and listen to what a Turk is charged for the item you want, then go and ask how much it is, if they ask for more, walk away.

We paid 15 lira for a water melon, my husband is Turkish, so not an ex pat thing. The Bim price would be per kilo as the others have said.
