In readiness for our first 6-month trip - I am busy "brushing up" on my Turkish - I must have remembered something after 2 and a half  years at night school!!  :)

Anyway came across this site which I thought was really useful if you have mastered some vocabulary but not understood all of the logic / grammar.

"Brushing up on your Turkish"? You must be fluent by now.
Only joking, How is marriage going? I guess you are still in Turkey.

Kolay gelsin

Nichola - thank you.

I am determined to show respect to my neighbours and get to understand the real culture. I got some funny looks on a flight a few yeas ago whilst reading a book titled: getting to understand Islam!

We cannot be critical of people not making an effort to integrate in the UK if we are guilty of not trying ourselves when we are the "guests".

Getting to understand (eat) lots of Anatolian cuisine is something Gill and I would both like to do  :)

I have complete respect for your efforts; I am becoming more embarrassed by my 'just enough to get by' Turkish although put me in a room with a wholesaler and I suddenly become almost fluent!

Sometimes I think immersing yourself in the culture and only being around Turkish people that don't speak any English is the only way to really learn the language.

I have found that when you don't have a choice such as travelling in parts of Turkey where no one speaks English suddenly I find I have the words, maybe a bit slow but enought to be understood and with practice it becomes easier.

I do find it frustrating around here sometimes though when you go to a shop or a market and you end up having a converstaion with you speaking Turkish and the Turk speaking English.

Anyway, good luck with this I had saved this web site to my favourites so I will take a leaf out of your book and make more of an effort. :D

It looks a very good site, I suppose it helps to form a habit of going to the site and trying something every time you visit. I am going to do the sticker bit first. Thanks for the link.
