Fromage Frais

Is fromage frais available in Turkey?  I believe it is a cream cheese but with fewer calories - any suggestions which cheese  to buy?  It is for Slimming World coleslaw which uses fromage frais.

I've never come across it.  I use suzme yogurt instead...not quite the same but it will do :)

Hi Marggie, found this on the Internet, hope it helps.   :)

In a recent live chat, Delia explained, ‘Fromage frais is a dairy product with either 2 per cent fat or 8 per cent fat. So really it’s a low-fat alternative to cream.

Fromage frais is a term used to describe very young fresh cheese and the best substitute is quark. You could also blend equal parts of cottage cheese and yoghurt until smooth, or use Greek-style yoghurt. Do not heat these too much, though, or they will curdle.

Crème fraiche can be substituted by mixing equal quantities of liqhtly whipped double cream with Greek yoghurt (or another thick yoghurt), but if it’s being heated you have to be careful not to let it boil. Alternatively, add a drop or two of lemon juice to some lightly whipped cream, or mix equal quantities of lightly whipped cream with soured cream, then leave at room temperature for about eight hours before refrigerating.

Thanks  Jan & Lotty. I've used suzme yogurt before but have never tried quark. Don't think I've seen cottage cheese in Turkey, have seen some cheese called lor, maybe it is similar.  An old Slimmers World quiche recipe I do here calls for cottage cheese but I suppose any very low fat cheese would do when in Turkey.

Not that I am an expert in this field, but I do know that you cannot find Fromage Frais in Turkey, but we do get some from our neighbour who makes it when boiling off the unpasturised milk she gets from a cow owned by her friend.

Fromage frais is nothing like cottage cheese in texture.  I detest cottage cheese but fromage frais is more like mousse in consistency.  I use it mixed with Mascarpone in cheesecake as it makes the end result lighter than using all cream cheese.  Surely a lower fat mayonnaise would give you a more realistic coleslaw, or is that not available in Turkey either >

Hi Echogirl, the cottage cheese is required for a quiche recipe I have not for coleslaw  Light mayonnaise is available in Turkey and that is what I use now for coleslaw but a Slimming World recipe calls for fromage frais so just wanted to know if it was available. (See first post).
