Learn Turkish with the free Doulingo app
« on: April 17, 2016, 12:10:22 PM »
Doulingo

I recently saw this FREE app recommended elsewhere and decided to check it out.

So far I am really impressed with it. I decided to start as a beginner and although I haven't yet progressed to the stage where I'm learning that much I didn't already know, some of it was locked away in my subconscious and needed digging out...

It uses various learning techniques, there's audio and plenty of repetition. It's divided into sections and you have to progress through them before you can move on, you can redo them any time and there is the opportunity to practice weak skills at any time too. I particularly like this section.

You do need to be able to spell in both English and your chosen language or it will correct you and I'd recommend using a tablet rather than a phone and you need to be able to access a Turkish keyboard which can easily be added on a tablet.

For beginners I'd recommend having a dictionary to hand but pressing and holding on new words in some instances gives a translation.

I have found it quite addictive unlike any other attempts I've made to improve my spoken Turkish. I'm interested to see how I get on when I reach the stage where I'm learning more new words and grammar and finding it more of a challenge!

I do highly recommend this app for anyone interested in even getting the basics. Lots of other languages available in the app too.

Sounds very good Nichola, one excellent tip I'd give for learning any language is to use/practice whatever you've just learned as soon and as often as possible. This seems to set it in the brain. Another tip is be brave and speak loudly and clearly, when not confident we tend to speak quietly in case we've got it wrong, then when they look confused and ask what you said, it knocks your confidence.  :)

You're welcome Derek   :)

How would you describe yourself, as a complete beginner, a beginner with a little knowledge or do you already have some understanding of grammar and have some vocabulary/spelling.

I just wonder how easy it would be for someone starting from scratch.

Linda, did you notice you can tap the loud speaker to repeat what is said as many times as you want and there is the normal (fast) speech and also a loud speaker with slower speech which is definitely better for long sentences.
