Getting home
« on: June 11, 2017, 18:48:50 PM »
What's anyone's recommendation for flying home with regard to what time to arrive at the airport?

I'm hearing bad things about delays at the gates.

Thanks

We flew back last Thursday, Stoop for the 22.15 flight. We arrived with the usual 2 hour leeway and it was no problem. Quite a queue for check in but quickly dealt with. Some confusion at gate 30 , as they had both Manchester and Gatwick flights going at similar times from the same gate. No signs to indicate which queue you needed to be in! More checks on bags at the gate check but generally no issues.

Our daughter went on the same flight a week earlier and despite her view that there were "gazillions" of people when she arrived. she still cleared check in within 20 minutes.Just our experience but that what it was.....

Friends who returned home Thursday and some last night said the search at the departure gate was the worst. Both delayed by 45 minutes because of the checks here. Check in desks open slightly earlier but this makes no difference to check at departure gate, they said. Also wifi still free but now you have to go to a kiosk, scan your boarding card and log in. But last night it was not working.

I am hearing some people are putting their  electronic equipment in their hand luggage to show when they arrive at the belts  and then putting it into their suitcases, some are saying  they put it in their  hold luggage and nothing was said, then some are sayingit was in the hold luggage and they were asked to take it out.
I wonder does anyone know what is the correct thing to do.

Possibly because with Easyet there is not a lot of room for luggage in the lockers as a lot of people are hand luggage only and if the lockers get full their stuff has to go into the hold.

We flew home with Thos Cook last week. They were adamant that any electrical device over 9cm (I think) was in the hold bag. They had reps at each desk with a measuring device and if it was too big in the hold it goes. Also there is a list of what you can and cannot take in the plane including portable charging devices, these were confiscated. One baggage check and scan before check in,double check electricals at check in desk, another scan and pat down after check in then all hand luggage searched at gate before boarding.Great security but allow 2 1/2 hrs before boarding.

We were delayed for 2 reasons.  Scan just inside the doors was ok, but at check in some people do not know what 20 kilos are.  So they had to move luggage between the bags that they had and then to find that they were over the 6 kilos in their hand luggage. So again they had to take items out of the hand luggage.  All the time we are queuing behind them.  I asked a Thomas Cook Rep why they could not ask them to step aside and let other people through while they sorted themselves out.  The Rep said they had asked them to step aside, but they refused and as the reps are not allowed to touch their luggage they left them.  This happened to 2 families in front of us. It took 45 minutes to check in. Then at the gate we had to queue again to have our hand luggage and us searched.  All our electric goods were in our hold case.

We went through Dalaman Airport last last night on our return journey.  Arrived 4 hours before the flight, walked straight through the doors, about 4 people in front of us.  We put our ipads, kindles and phones into a tray to be scanned.  At the other side, guy asked us to turn on all items.  Once checked he asked us to put them in our hold luggage apart from phones which we were told we could keep in our hand luggage.  Two pat downs and bag search.
Easyjet desk opened three hours before the flight.  Got through quickly.  We were searched  at again before passport control, pat down and bag search, asked to turn on phones.
When gates opened there was a queue, there was a table set up for men and one for women. Pat down, bag, search told to turn on phones,  All hand luggage cases were opened and searched.  I would say this took the most time.
Not half as bad as we expected, however, possibly would have been different if there had been a lot of people queuing to go into the Airport at the time we arrived.
Best advice is put eletronic equipment in your hand luggage and then transfer it to tray at the door scanners.  If you put it in the hold luggage, you could be asked to removed it as Staff need to see each piece turned on, so make sure you charge up all equipment.
