Credit Card Security - Or Not it Seems
« on: May 06, 2008, 22:10:52 PM »
I am no stranger to buying online, I do tend to be as careful as possible mind you.

I recently made a credit card purchase online, and when asked for the 3 digit number on the back of the card came over a bit confused, and entered the 3 figure number from a completely different card of mine.

The resulting security? Nothing. Order taken, payment accepted, product supplied.

These 3 figure security numbers are very good protection against online fraud, are they not :(

My visa has just been 'compromised' according to visa Co.
I still don't know if it was through an online fraud or phone.
Only thing I could think of is I ordered a laptop from Dell by ringing their sales team I think they are based in India. I gave my card details & security no off back. 4 days later someone is booking flights with American Airlines with my card details.
Nice people!

nationwide are just introducing a new type card reader used in conjuction with your card when purchasing online, i have just been sent one, for security reasons only obviously...
i had my account hacked into online last year and put it down to online purchases from a certain uk company. nationwide noticed unusual activity in my account and shut down the debit card which was quite inconvieniant as you can imagine.

Scunner - think your experience was more reflective of the website that you were using. Most organisations are using services such as Mastercard and Visa 3D secure that do all the security checks before moving the payment and order through.

Stuart slightly off topic but I have just had an email back from Nationwide to say you can use your card reader anywhere in the world where you can do internet banking, also you can use any other banks card reader, I have one for Barclays as well.
