Mugla Our Own Back yard!!

For anyone interested in travel with a little adventure we reccomend a copy of the "Mugla" Book we have had our copy since 2005 from the TI Fethiye. It cost 8TL sometimes they dont charge these days. Sure some may have it but bet a lot havn't.

Mugla covering the area from the Antalya border to Milas to the north. Lots of coast lots of history.

A copy of the book will give you ALL the details of ALL the towns villages history and a whole lot more. A wonderful tool for the Turkey Travel enthusiast- in your own back yard. The problem you find is  where do we start, its full of all the basic and detail you need info accommodation bays maps journeys,a little biased and why not. Make allowances this area moves quicker these days. Some roads are much better than when the book was published. The road to Knidos on the datca penisular is now easy to travel.

Over the last eight years we have travelled most of the Mugla area. Maybe a weekend or longer. Some places we return to now and then.

Driving we find is good we take our time explore side roads that can reveal hidden gems, some Nowt! Always worh a try in our mind. Expect the unexpected. Not all the roads are A or Bs. Common sense prevails.

Just to mention a few favourites:-

Bozburun Peninsular. Dont miss Beyir it can add years to your life, also Selimiye Turkish PM Hols there. Just check the Marmaris section in the book. No you dont even have to go through Marmaris.

Datca Peninsular. Make the effort to stay in Palamatbuku give yourself a little time in Knidos, see the Med and Agean in a single view.Datca has its own section in the book.

A weekend in Akyaka. Check the Ula section make sure you find the differnt way back home.

Not easy to reccommed and do so with our tastes in mind.

Whatever try for a copy its a realy good and interestig read even if you dont travel.

We live in a Turkish province of Mugla with fantastic views and history and we love it.

Lets know how you fare. Or has anyone any Mugla favourites/

Koycegiz lake is super and definitely Akyaka - our favourite place so far. Cavus is lovely too (empty beach in late May) near to Olympus. Best to just drive off, stop everywhere (particularly smaller places) and stop over in Pensiyons.

Hi! Tina,

Alan & Pauline this end.

We just seem to bypass Koycegiz to go somewhere else been to the lake front but not spent any time. Must do. Love Cavus/Adrasan one of our our favourite journeys is Kas Kalkan Kekova O/Night then call and see F/Christmas at Myra, Finike Cavus O/N, Olympus back to Finike over the mountain, calling at Arykanda, old site worth exploring, then on to Elmali a real Turkish town, very prosperous too. Then over to Seki and home.
Last year we found a new road from Elmali to Seki. Half way was a dual sign both saying Fethiye so we took the new one. Not for the faint hearted beautiful drive but the mountain road was very VERY steep it takes you up to almost 3000mtr new but quite narrow and twisty. not sure what the winter will have done to it,A wonderful journey.

Thanks for the info and when you find more please post.

We applaud you style, it is the best way, drive and see what comes, not the 4* types anyway.

regards

A & P

We drove from Fethiye up to Seki and then Elmali and found the road narrow but as there was not too much traffic it was a pleasant journey with lovely scenery.
In Elmali there was a lovely mosque and some Ottoman houses. It surprised us that it was such a large town. There was an oil wrestling tournament on at the time we visited.
We then took the road to Finike and came to a huge lake which had a dam I believe. It looked as if the work which had been done was very recent. We then drove into Kalkan for a meal and headed back to Fethiye. It was a very enjoyable journey and the roads were good and not too busy.

Luck you. Always missed the Oil Wrestling they say Elmali is a good one.

You can also take a road from the top of the hill out of Kas and one from just before you enter Kalkan to Elmali. They make it easy day jouneys from Fethiye. Roads are narrow,as you say quiet but also well maitained, and spetacular scenery.
