OK,

Have given up on any idea of any kind of solar central heating.

Got a bloke round to quote for a Sorba with back boiler and pump, which seems ok, but what I want to know is, what is the cost of wood, hard or softwood and how much would an "average" sized Sorba use in a winter from say end October to start June?? Would Charcoal be more efficient as per cost or is Turkish coal viable??

Any advice gratefully received.

TC

There's no 'r' in it. It's Soba and it's a generic name, like a Hoover or an Aga. There are several manufacturers of wood burning stoves, Soba being just one of them, and the quality varies.

In Kaya we were using about 3 tonnes of hardwood, a tonne of pine and about half a tonne of coal during the winter. If you have the capacity to buy in bulk, you can reduce the costs quite significantly. Think about combining orders with a neighbour and buy the wood by the trailer load.

Charcoal would cost you an absolute arm and a leg !

KKOB.

Is that four and a half tons of wood??

We have a 3 bed apartment using only 2-3 rads at a time.

TC - its a bit warmer in Tuzla compared to Kaya - we are close by you in Babataşı and last year only needed the fire on during December and January, never actually counted the cost or quantity used.

TC I read it as 3 tonnes of hardwood and 1 tonne of pine making 4 tonnes of 'wood' and half a tonne of coal.
