What is this? It  has been sitting on the umbrella for about 10 minutes and seems quite happy there in the sun.

It's an oversexed, shortsighted Stick Insect on Steroids.      ;)         ( I think )

It looks like a species of grasshopper. The "spike" on the rear is her ovipositor.

Hubby says it's a cricket

Grasshoppers and crickets are related and together with the katydids and locusts, make up the Order Orthoptera (meaning 'straight wings' ;).

We thought it was a cricket, but on a close look we thought not.  It sat next to Phil for such a long time.  At the same time I saved a bee from the pool and we watched it on the ground drying ot.  I have it some sugar water to revive it.
We had an "insect afternoon".  Now we are looking after a stray puppy that someone has dumped outside. Lovely little doggy and there is a mark around her neck where a collar has been. Such a shame.  She is sleeping on a bed on the patio kindly proved by our lovey neighbour Ingrid, who has left food and water for her.
If any expats are looking for a puppy here she is.
