Title: DNA Testing for genealogy
Post by: BernieTeyze on April 23, 2017, 21:58:11 PM
Ancestry.com have a sale on for their DNA kits. Think it's 23/24th.
For people that are interested in genealogy,or maybe trying to find an adoptive parent, child or sibling it's a bargain. I have spent years doing the family tree, and have uncovered a few secrets along the way. I am particularly interested in the ethnicity results. Since I was a kid people have been asking if I'm Chinese or if we have oriental origins. Personally,I think it's our Irish gypsy blood. Well I am about to find out,cos my results are about to come in. My test is in processing, after a long ass wait. I am a little anxious what I'll uncover, but then that's all part of the fun of it I suppose. My friend who is Irish born and bred is looking for her unknown birth father. Her ethnicity came back 88% Irish, then there was Spanish,German, and Caucasus..which is a region between Turkey and Iran..I think the reduced cost of the test is a great bargain if you are into that sort of thing. There are videos on you tube about it that are interesting to watch too.

Ancestry has a huge genealogy database where you can find matches with others that have tested. You can also upload your raw DNA to Gedmatch another site which holds records of other DNA testing sites. These test results can be uploaded to promothese for a medical report based on your DNA results.
What does the one at Home and Bargain do?

No idea Bernie, My husband pointed out to me and I said I was surprised to see a DNA Kit in Home Bargains, but did not bother to look at it.
If I go in this week and they still have them, I will let you know.  :)

My daughter did this test , and it came back 50% Irish which was a great surprise. On further investigation it transpired they lump Celtic/ North Scotland with Irish.

Which company did she test with littlereddevil? How long ago? There is a new part on ancestry called genetic communities. It's only been launched this past month. Also did she upload to gedmatch?

Oh and look for a free shipping code too! Every little helps as they say. Kayakebab, you say you are splitting the cost between your sister, is that because you think you will get the same dna results. Although we inherit 50% off each of our parents. But our share of it might be different for each sibling. So like a bag of marbles, my %might be be blue, red and green. My sister's might be blue yellow and orange. Something I was a bit shocked about. Thought if you shared same parents it would be same as my sibling..All interesting stuff. I didn't know anything about this until January this year. Now I'm a little bit addicted.

I find that I am becoming addicted too Bernie. I have joined a family history group with my local U3A and have recently subscribed to Ancestry.co. Am spending hours researching and my next step is to get my DNA analysed! A real time waster.   ;)

I signed up to Ancestry.com a long while ago. I keep getting emails from them to tell me they've got information on my family. The problem is, each email tells me a different name for my father.

I feel just like Trigger when he had to admit that when his Mum registered his birth she put "Some Soldiers" for his Dad's name.

Aww kkob we used to say that to our mom..Our dad was some soldiers..Lol.They bring up all possibilities on your tree.Do the dna..No doubt then dna don't lie :D
Sadlerhave been doing this for years since I found out my paternal grandad died in all saints lunatic asylum when my dad was 5 ..(I know you lot the Apple didn't fall too far n all that) none knew anything about him other than his name and where he died..Not sleeping sickness as me mother used to say. A kind genealogist at the registry office found him and I was able to get a death cert for him. That was treasured for years thinking I would never find Alf Smith..Until I looked and saw the person who registered his death was a son in law..The rest as they say is history. Grandad worked in a factory and his arm was caught in a press and crushed. He got septasemia and took 3 months to die from his Injuries..

The main reason we want to do it is because my dad refuses to reveal anything about his dad and says he doesn't know anything.
We frequently get asked if we have foreign blood so hoping for some clue as to whether there is anything other than English.

Well I got the results back from Ancestry. No huge suprises, except Russian, finland and iberian peninsular. The fun really starts when you upload your raw dna to gedmatch.com. They have all sorts of weird and wonderful programmes there that show your true ethnicity. Ancestry only do a 7 generation thing..and it comes back and im 5.8% Turkish..lol Berna Teyze Turke..Wonder if thats enough for them to give me a work permit..   ;)   ;) ;D ;D
I was looking through my list of dna matches on ancestry and my matches have these people in their matches, which makes them my matches too..what part of dna you inherit is all very weird and wonderful. ..to tell the truth I Dont know which is the persons name of which is the area.. :  :)

I also got iberian peninsula, which is bad news for you JF in case I want to re connect with the ancestors. :-* :-* :-* :o :o

The last time I had my DNA tested I was told that my closest match was a red geranium on our front window sill. :(

I'm not sure the Iberian Peninsula is ready for you - jeez, you create havoc and chaos within a twenty mile radius wherever you go!

Serious stuff now clever, educated people. I got an email from this Turkish dna match. The family left Turkey due to Armenian genocide. Some family went to America but intake numbers were limited. So they went to Cuba, married and got into America that way. She watched a film recently called The Promise. I will of course be watching it as soon as I can locate it. However, I know nothing about Armenia/Armenians..Err Kim Kardashian family are Armenian..So before I write the wrong thing, can anyone give a brief synopsis on this please. I don't recall ever knowingly using Wikipedia..That's twice in the past week I've needed to access it.

I'm not sure whether you'll be able to get access to this from Turkey but it's worth a read.

Successive Turkish governments since the founding of the Republic in 1923 have denied there was a "genocide" whilst not denying extensive loss of life among the Armenian population of Turkey.

Kardashian family are Armenian..

As a guide, many families in the Western World with surnames ending in -ian or -yan are of Armenian descent. There are also families of Persian / Iranian with a similar ending to their family names.

There are several celebrities, including Cher (real name Cherylin Sarkissian), Andre Agassi, Charles Aznavour and even Princess Dianna, with Armenian heritage.
