Title: The deed(s) is done. Güle güle Fethiye.
Post by: JohnF on April 18, 2017, 19:18:58 PM
That's our apartment in Karagözler away.  Gone.  Sold.  Feels a bit odd not having somewhere to scoot down to in Fethiye after all these years.  In fact, after selling both the house in Istanbul and our potential retirement gaff in Fethiye a couple of years ago, to now have sold our last tangible connection with Turkey feels decidedly weird!

Anyway, onwards.  UK house goes on market in a couple of weeks and if we get a decent offer then it's off to España (I knew that Irish grandmother would come in useful    ;) )
Still no idea what we're going to do, take on a "project" or spend a bit more and go for something already reformed.  Prices are decent where we're heading, it's not a tourist area like the Costas, so no blinged up Brits or Germans pushing prices through the roof.  The flip side is an urgent need to improve our Spanish, coming out with phrases like "iki cervezas lütfen" and "si, es çok caliente" just make you sound like a complete tit.

Swapping raki and kebabs for sherry, flamenco and tapas...   I can live with that.

Before anyone puts dos ve iki together and gets cinco, we'd planned this for some time accepting an offer in November last year    :) nothing to do with Sunday.

Like I said personal choice. I loved Turkey but I know a lot of people who went  once and did not enjoy the experience I feel the same about Spain.

Too scared to tell you - but it suited us as a base - 35 mins from Alicante - very expat (not just brits though) - Ciudad Quesada - lots of full time retirees - plenty of good quality builds - 20,000 population and busy all year as half live their full time and Guadamar's beautiful beaches only 10 mins away. Bought something in January - on a lovely site - that had just been refurbished to a high standard - so we could move in with 2 cases - which is all we brought back from Turkey  :(

Paid a very good price for a "quick sale" and already seen an identical property on the same site reject an offer of €20,000 more than we paid - so happy that we have nothing to do in the place and if we don't like it - we won't lose much if anything at all.

I am slightly surprised at the level of taxes you have to pay in Spain - along with bank charges and high utility bills but then we were spoilt in Turkey - but our sites fees and council tax actually work out cheaper than in Turkey - so the savings can off set the utility bills !

The standard of food is superb - and prices are very reasonable - so overall it will do for us to "give it a go" and ultimately it's the outdoor Mediterranean lifestyle we want more than a "resale profit" at our time of life - leave you youngsters to the fast lane   :)

I don't drink beer, don't smoke but I do know I picked a bottle or two of rose for Gill in the local supermarket for 1.5 euros and she said it was lovely

Yeah, it's swings and roundabouts regarding bills in comparison to Turkey I reckon.  You definitely need an accountant/tax guy to do your first years taxes, just so you get a grip of how its done.  A lot of Spaniards pay someone to do their annual return, so when in Madrid..

Where we are heading a 500ml (roughly a pint) of Estrella is €1.50 and a smaller beer (300ml) is 90 cents.  Glass of wine, probably about 175ml, is €1.20 and a sherry is €1 a pop - fino, oloroso etc.  Spirits kick off from €3 inc mixer and fags are €4 plus the odds.

Wine, spirits and beer are incredibly cheap in the supermarket - decent quality reds, whites and roses €2/3, better quality stuff €4 to €6 and some seriously nice bottles still well under a tenner.  Spirits are half to two thirds the price compared to the UK and a quarter of the price compared to Turkey!

Eating out is pretty cheap but the biggest difference from Turkey is quality of ingredients and variety of what's on offer.  We can have 3 or 4 tapas and couple of drinks each for well under €15 at our local bar - and the portion size for tapas are a lot bigger than what you'll get in a tourist area.

Good luck to all those off on a new adventure.  We started ours two years ago in North Cyprus and truly haven't looked back.  Twelve years in different parts of Turkey, all of which were wonderful. But unfortunately I couldn't remain in the country with the political situation as it is now.  We toyed with Spain and the Canary Isles but decided here was the best move for us as our private medical insurance with Güneş sigorta could continue.

I really hope we shan't lose the input on here of people who understand what is going on as although I couldn't stay I am still very interested in following the situation.

Once again good luck with new adventures.

Love North Cyprus Bernie. Kyrenia is beautiful. I know Guardamar and Quesada well Ian as my ex mother-in-law has a villa 10mins drive from both. Used to go every year. Nice areas and Guardamar nice in the evenings with the market stalls. You should take a drive to Elche and Guadalest up in the hills, it's beautiful.

Bernie.....

From Wikipedia:

''Northern Cyprus (Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs), officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC; Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti), is a self-declared state that comprises the northeastern portion of the island of Cyprus. Recognised only by Turkey, Northern Cyprus is considered by the international community to be part of the Republic of Cyprus.''

It is most definitely not Turkey and not ruled by Turkey.  I think with what I said previously it's unlikely I would have chosen to live here if it were so.

Good luck with the move to Spain. My sister bought a lovely place out there years ago and was very happy for many years. The one thing she said to watch out for if you buy in some areas the water supply can be from a well you have to have drilled yourself which can be expensive. The local people were very welcoming and friendly in her village and the local food and wine very good. There were loads of festivals to celebrate saints and I went to some and had a great time.Watch out for you water you if you buy out on your own a bit though.

Well as the referendum has already happened and there was no annexation I think we can rest peacefully in our beds.  The great leader has enough on his plate without worrying about this little piece of territory.

You know me well  ;)

I did think about it, but to be honest...  after almost twenty years of  creating, administering, owning, and otherwise being involved with online forums all relating to Turkey I reckon I've had enough.  I don't think I've got the oomph any more to do this kinda stuff from scratch (there you go Alan, great in for a wanky picture  :) ).

Dispensing my seriously secular perspective (in respect of TR) nonsense on here is about as much as I've got the energy for now.

Well, house went on market last Thursday and was offered the asking price on Saturday.  A bit of haggling and ended up with it sold yesterday (subject to usual contracts etc), for a good chunk over asking price and the geezer even gave us a cash deposit to show his sincerity.

You wouldn't believe the hangover I've got this morning, and my OH ain't looking to bright either.

Is new house chosen?
Title: Re: The deed(s) is done. Güle güle Fethiye.
Post by: JohnF on May 25, 2017, 13:16:15 PM
Thanks folks.

No, new house was sort of chosen but as it was at the higher end of the budget we've set, we decided to wait till uk house was sold before committing any substantial amounts of money elsewhere.  Unfortunately, someone else thought the same as we did and it went last Friday.

OH was a bit disappointed but only that, it's no biggie - plenty more on the market and if need be we'll rent again until the right place comes up.  Away from the main tourist regions, the market in the south west of Spain is pretty flat just now, lot of stuff been hanging around for a good while and not that many new places coming on the market.  There's a few places over our budget that we may have a look at and try a cheeky offer   :)

It's not that dissimilar to Turkey in some respects, properties on with multiple agents at varying prices, descriptions and photographs.  Then of course you have the owners trying to sell the same property on the Spanish equivalent to Gumtree or Sahibinden.  Again like Turkey, some owners really need to stop and take a quick reality check - sorry amigo, but that delicately balanced pile of rubble may be a casa para reformar (house to restore) worth €150,000 to you, but it just screams MONEYPIT to anyone with half a brain - which explains why its been on the market for over nine months.

We've factored in renting for up to twelve months when doing our sums (on the back of a fag packet as they say   :) ) so pretty relaxed about the whole thing.

I'm off now to be a bueno öğrenci and practice my Spanglish on some students   :)
