Making a Christmas lunch with all the trimmings as the one we had in Spain was beyond awful... Having a couple of friends round in the evening for a buffet and a few drinks.. All this is dependant on if Barrie recovers from Man Flu before next week and I don't start with it.. Loads of people coughing and choking on the plane so it is probably only a matter of time... X

We have in recent years gone to Gran's (my mum's) but are thinking to spend it at ours for a change. Mainly because we are bored to death with watching BBC Scotland's idea of NYE television, which hasn't changed in 30 years. My mum insists on being at home. She also insists on going to Tesco when we give her a lift to do her shopping. Even if we are going to Morrisons -this is because she "knows where everything is" at Tesco.

We were at hers for Christmas night last year and to be honest we were grateful to George Michael for croaking as it gave our evening a bit of a lift to have something new happen.

With the exception of Ally Bain and Phil Cunningham - it has been appalling in recent years.

Gone are the days of Duncan MacRae, Roddy MacMillan and the like.  :( :( :( :(

We'll be driving over to a few of our former neighbours for a bring-a-dish curry night. At some time after midnight we'll be using our torches to light our staggering way over the field, along the river (hoping not to fall in) and across the bridge back to our place. Well, that's the plan anyway.

The Spaniards (in our province) don't do New Years Eve in public, so to speak - it's a family thing and most bars and restaurants start to close about 5pm.  A lot of folks head off to Madrid, Sevilla or Barcelona where the celebrations are a bit more in keeping with other major cities.  The only places open on the run up to the bells are the large hotels who put on parties for their guests.

Last year we made the mistake of wandering out to see what was happening about 8/9pm, and found the only folks on the street were tourists and drunken stragglers from the afternoon celebrations.

This year is shaping up to a bit more social  :)

An 11am start is looking likely with the venue (or venues) yet to be decided.  The majority of the ex pat friends we have here are away so its us, our Spanish teacher and her bloke plus (possibly) a German couple we know who are here on holiday.  A lot of places do an all day "ticket", pay so much and its free food and drink all day.  Others simply reduce their prices and in many cases provide free tapas and snacks.  Its very much a daytime fiesta!

New Years day is much of the same, a family day with only the odd bar here and there open.  No idea what we'll be doing then, other than getting the flat ready for our girls arriving the following day - something we're all looking forward to more than anything.

What will you be bringing?
Due to me having taken responsibility for Christmas Day, Hilary is doing New Year's Eve and making: Bombay chicken with lentils; potatoes, chickpea & spinach curry; and rice & peas (which sounds a bit Caribbean to me). The banquet will be held at a secret location.

Well, thankfully it will not be Jimmy Shand and Andy Stewart on a black and white tv.

This year is a small, at home, family and friends affair.

Some years ago (1970's) I spent Hogmany in Prestwick. I was introduced to whisky macs.

I have never touched whisky since - indeed, to this day, I can't even smell it without feeling nauseous.

Thanks to all for your advice on curries. I shall make sure to interrogate my friends as to whether they have made Egyptian, Iranian or horse curries and warn them of the likely side effects. Should make for the start of a pleasant evening.

    Vindaloo today Colwyn.?

Last nights Television was disappointing. Jools didn't produce a "special " so swapped channels

to watch Nile Rogers, who I like, but it wasn't New Year quality. The night was only saved by the

    alcohol and food and company.

Well our night went to plan. Unlike Kevin we thought Jools Hollands show was great, even with Ed Sheeran on it. The wine flowed and we were tucked up in bed by 2.00. All set now for the real NY celebrations, kicking off at 2.30 pm. No work for me tomorrow.  ;D

The word "Hogmany" seems to have any number of possible origins.

From a single, personal experience a long time ago coupled with tv coverage over many years,
I think it simply means "help me get up".

Party started here about 2pm and ended at midnight with us watching the fireworks from our roof terrace.  All in all, an excellent BBC free Hogmanay.  Oh, we also came home with numerous back packs and fridge magnets courtesy of one of the sherry producers who were doling out free promo items all afternoon.  :)

Having survived Hilary's willful, staggering attempts to drag us both off the path into the flooded river or, lurching the other way, the lake, we can tonight enjoy a traditional post-NYE meal - left over curry (potatoes, chickpeas & spinach) with pork sausages and black pudding. Quite internationalist in this household.

You're right Mercury. Should have stuck with bangers 'n' mash with onion gravy. Hope the Spanish fish stew Hilary is making will make up for it.
