Title: Kayakoy article today's Turkish daily news
Post by: civciv on July 30, 2006, 21:40:56 PM
There is a lovely article in today's Turkish Daily News about Kayakoy for those interested in the history of the village.

Im not sure the link will work, so if it doesn't then just copy and paste the link into the browser and it should work!

We visited Fethiye, Olu and Kayakoy for the weekend about a month ago.  Loved the village, such a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of Marmaris where we are.  Will go back later in the season when we have more time as we only had about 2 hours which wasn't enough once we had taken a seat at a cafe opposite the village (cant remember the name) and ordered gozleme! Want to go back for the wine tasting and dinner some of you have written about as well..

It certainly is a hauntingly beautiful place, and worth the walk, either from Hisaronu or from Fethiye. If you want the past to come alive read "Birds without Wings" a work of fiction but set in Kayakoy at the time of partition, its also a good account of the battle at Galipoli, and the hardships that the ordinary Turkish soldier suffered. Also there is a good account of the life and times of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk - Father of the Turkish republic.

Would also recomend "Birds Without Wings" a briliant novel, it not only brings Kayakoy to life, but paints a fantastic portrait of life in Turkey at the begining of the 20th century and the events that shaped Turkey into the country it is today.

The old buildings are all owned by the Turkish government.

There has been talk recently in the village about the government selling off the "Ghost Village" for development. Any offers?

Brilliant idea Dippz!

Could also be a good place to chuck all the plastic water bottles and empty beer cans that are left beside the road and along the forest trails!

I think that kayakoy is a bit rubbish..I mean who wants to look at a load of old houses for? You can do that here in Brum, theres a smashin' old derelict council estate down the road from me and everytime I walk past I get to thinking wow! I wonder what sort of people lived in these houses?
I think 'The Kayakoy young offenders village' has much more of a ring to it..and just think how those little rascals from the UK would benefit from such a wonderful project.

I know a house nearby too that could be the head quarters too. I'm sure the present occupants would accect a few Lira and a 2 man tent as compensation!!
