Title: Notes For New Members
Post by: Scunner on July 24, 2008, 08:05:27 AM
The section "Announcements to Members" has gone, it was fairly rarely used so I deleted it.

New Members do not need to post, but if they want to it is considered good manners to introduce yourself first. Doesn't have to be a long intro, you don't need to divulge your life history if you don't want to.

So here are the 3 golden rules:

1. Introduce yourself if you are going to post messages.
2. Don't argue with me  ;)
3. Read the rules

Rules are at http://calis-beach.co.uk/forum/rules.asp

Most importantly, new members should be encouraged - we all made mistakes when we joined a forum - we don't want to see more established members criticising such things.

Enjoy  :)

 8) Now, I thought you would have understood Kaya,if you see a jeep full of people going past and they all wave, you would only wave back once, you would'nt do 10 waves or hiyas ,:P oh this is getting worse, I know some of you know what I am waffling about. ;)

Ah, I understand now. Good idea. Here's mine:

"I wholeheartedly welcome all members, those already joined and those who will join in future. Please take this welcome as an all encompassing welcome to each and every one of you. I won't be welcoming you individually, as I wouldn't if all the people on a bus waved to me, in such cases I would offer one wave which is meant for all passengers. Please take this special welcome as all my waves in one go".

About right? :D

No, No ,NO What Laffa means is when a new member says "I am a new member" only one person says "Welcome to the forum" instead of everyone doing it and wasting bandwidth
Title: Notes For New Members
Post by: Scunner on July 24, 2008, 18:05:26 PM
Well that wouldn't be too welcoming would it :D

If people are worried about wasting bandwidth, stop the senseless rows of bloody smileys every other post, and quoting the post above you, especially when that post contains a photograph, which really doesn't need to be seen twice. [:o]

Or maybe a moderator could extend the welcome on behalf of the total CBF membership and people only make an additional comment say, for example, posting that they live near the new member - if they do.

Hello all

As a new member thought I had better read the rules!. Only recently come across the Forum.   I posted a repliyed before I told you about me...Oh dear!  My family have been visiting Calis for 12 years and love the place.  We have a Villa in Calis and hope to retire to Calis in next 2 years.   Lots of our friends have been introduced to Calis and come year after year.

Will that do for now?

I am sure there would have been  be a lot more online members willing to post on this forum it it were not for having to go through the ridiculous  embarrassment of the introduction procedure. Many only want to to ask a simple question but they have had  to go through all this induction before they can. If it now has changed that they dont it has not come to soon. It might be a good idea to let members of this forum to access "all" topcis as well instead of just certain ones unless they are "special" members. Whats the great secrets on these topcs that only certain privaledged members can veiw? I guess the answer is that probably that they own properties in Calis and the likes of others dont.
Secret society one assumes.

Really? I've always found that the introduction procedure was rather courteous. I certainly never thought of it as a "ridiculous embarrassment"!!!! People do ask questions without introducing themselves, it isn't a problem - we are just saying it would be nice if they did.

It might be a good idea to let members access all forums. But it isn't.

Sounds like you don't like it here, but thanks for your thoughts.

Yes I do like it here. I think this forum is great. Not just because it is about Calis and it provides unlimited information about it and other nearby areas but also because you Scunner have turned this site into a community.By coming here you hear about Calis but more importantly too I believe most regular members this is their chat communication centre.I am not going to knock that as it all part of a forum that I have enjoyed myself. But only when it does'nt get too annoying to others as its their forum as well.My point about the introduction thing is that although you may think it is good manners. It is very embarrassing to some others. So therfore they do not post.I don't know anyother forum that you have to make an introduction speech to make a post just because the owner of the forum  thinks its a nice courteous  thing to do for him to make them acceptable in his eyes.I have as I said think this is a good thing if it has now been removed from the members joining rules. I am sure this forum will get more members because of this correct decision. This forum can only get better now.

its a shame about the poor membership though ( 4854) and the low number of posts (1247660- just think how many more if it wasnt for the ridulous embarrasment procedure for introductions- tut honestly whats that all about?
Title: Notes For New Members
Post by: Scunner on August 20, 2008, 23:28:05 PM
Excuse me Mrs C but the post count is more like 198,000; don't forget our 71,000 archived posts :D

I'm all for constructive criticism but this is lost on me. People want to ask the collective membership if the Seril is a good hotel, but they don't want to say hello? How does that work then? It is also a curious first post. Nothing like feeling too embarrassed to say hello but not too embarrassed to wade straight in with a whole "why this place is not run correctly" speil.

We add over a hundred members per month, post counts are up month on month and have been for years - and I don't see any resort specific forum in Turkey that comes close to that. The reason some forums are specific members only is quite obvious. People who own properties in certain complexes like to talk in private about issues that are private. Why anyone would like access to read about sewage backing up or windows leaking is beyond me. The "property owners club" accusation won't wash either - there are far more non-owners than owners on CBF.

Overall I can't see how CBF could have evolved better or quicker than it did. Maybe I am too attached/involved to be the best judge but to think we would be close to 5000 members in 4 years was ludicrous when we started. I'll settle for that.

The rules are there for good reasons. We don't actually enforce them strictly (try posting what you did on other forums andyandy and see how long they stay before they are deleted) - but if you want a forum with no rules I'll show you where they used to be. The rules may not suit everyone, but within the moderator team we all believe they are necessary and the correct ones.

As I have said many times before, you can't please all of the people all of the time, and if you really want to know how difficult it is, set up your own forum, let's see where you are in 4 years.

I don't wish to sound bitter, but I wouldn't walk unannounced into your living room and slag off your curtains, so why you think you can do the same here is puzzling to me. If people are "embarrassed" to introduce themselves (and I don't believe even 1 in 4,800 was, it's a public forum!) then we'll be accommodating. There are several posts where I have said just that.

I haven't seen a better forum on any subject on the net, and if that sounds conceited, tough. The people on this forum make it what it is, so I'm not blowing my own trumpet.

Andy, stand corrected, 99.9% of the members of this forum think the member introduction is an excellent concept and the courteous way to go about things.
I personally would insist on even more detail than is currently acceptable. eg real name instead of only user name. If contributors have nothing to hide, then what's the problem[?]

Yes I would and have. The same as if I am with mates and someone asked something or joined in I would'nt expect them to introduce themselves.
On that basis you might as well say whenever you make a phone call you introduce yourself if its merely a question you want to ask. Same goes when you ask someone for directions or times of buses etc.If I went into Scunners estate agents and said to him I wanted to buy a 3 bedroom villa for 150k in Calis do you think he would say.Excuse me but you have'nt been curteous and introduced yourself to me before I can help you. Not in a millon years.

Title: Notes For New Members
Post by: Scunner on August 21, 2008, 15:19:28 PM
It's funny really, someone who didn't make an introduction, whingeing about having to make an introduction, and throughout, nobody requested an introduction. Three posts, all negative and complaining about how this site is run. What makes it even sadder is that "andyandy" wants to try to stir things up but once again, we have a faceless attacker - no name, hotmail address, no details. It's easy to criticise whatever you like when you are anonymous. Who are you exactly, andyandy?

We are not answerable to you, but yet I have tried to rationally explain why we do things the way we do. Three times you expressed your disappointment, three times I have replied to you. It won't happen again. Put your real name in your profile, let us know you have the balls to stand by what you write and you can have your say. If not, I will delete every single one from now on. I have opinions too, and people know my name. I won't discuss things with people that won't.

Finally, you haven't got a clue about me at all. If you came to my office and barked at me that you wanted to buy a 150k villa in Calis, I would tell you to pi$$ off out the door. I will not deal with people who think they can talk to me or my staff any way they want to because they have money to spend. I have refused to show houses to people who thought they could, and I have also driven people straight back to their hotel who thought I wasn't much more than their slave for the day. I am fortunate that I can choose who I deal with, money isn't my God.

And that really was my final word on the subject, "mystery man".

All have made me welcome. Just as I make them welcome. If I am with my mates and we are chatting about about football and an outsider joins in we dont mind. Why should we unless he is just looking to cause trouble. But thats never happened with me or my mates.I bet when you have gone in a Calis resturant you have probably chatted and had a laugh with others in there without announcing who you are.Everyone does it.Its called communication I believe.
