Title: poor old posty.
Post by: geordieboy on January 28, 2009, 10:34:03 AM
It seems our trusty postman has committed some transgression of the law and has received 15 mths as a result. It seems he signed for a document for somebody  who later denied receiving it,so what might well have been a helpful action backfired badly.
When we first moved to Ovacik 8 years ago there were no street names or house numbers and mail was delivered purely because he knew the names of people in the district.Part of our address when we first moved here was " the house behind the school",well the school closed down years ago and our place was miles away, but the mail was delivered.
I suppose the usual wags will make mileage out of my term "trusty postman",but he was,he's often asked me if I knew of a Mr or Mrs X,and if so where they lived,he's been knocked off his scooter, chased and attacked by dogs, abused by Brits because their mail has taken 3 weeks to arrive from the UK,etc, etc.
I personally could'nt care what he's allegedly done,he was a vital cog in the community.BRING HIM BACK.

We've heard half a dozen or so variations on the story of why he's been locked up and the sentence ranges from 1 to 5 years. But IMO, if he's been found guilty of theft, he deserves to be locked up.

Apparently residents of Ovacik and Hisaronu can now collect their post from Hisaronu PTT on production of their passport or Turkish ID card.

In the meantime the Zabita Polis are providing a delivery service in the centre of Hisaronu.

The following was posted this morning and has been copied and pasted from another form:

"I have been informed of the full details as to what happened to the postman, but cannot put them in writing for legal reasons. Suffice to say that it seems that he has been used as a "Patsy" by some unscrupulous characters, and is in prison awaiting trial, as is the norm in Turkey.

He has been the postman in the village for 21 years without any problems, and was due to retire in August this year. If this case is not resolved by then, he will lose all retirement benefits regardless of being found guilty or not. An added blow is that he has two young children to support."

As an ex-postman i can honestly say things like that happen in England, i was delivering on a round for another postie, hed told me that if a recorded letter comes for a certain address, just sign it and put it through the mailbox of the address on the letter, i was lucky it didn't arrive while i was on the round, but it can  and does happen. Yes our old postie used to do that all the time we were not in when he came.
Another postie used to leave parcels on doorstep & no card in door to say he left it.

I had a registered parcel from Turkey a few days ago (which needed signing for).  As I work in a school, I am never home during the day Monday to Friday.  Our postie is brilliant - I had no problem with him signing for it and pushing it through the door.   :)

I live in a row of six cottages in a little village, and if you need to collect a parcel from the main sorting office, it's a real pain as it closes at 1.30pm (very difficult if you are at work all day).  One of our neighbours has a small porch and if someone's not at home, all parcels are left there (with a note pushed through your door!)   :)

He's a great guy - before we moved here, I was involved in a nasty car accident (my fault   :o:( ).  He just happened to be delivering to a house close by.  He ran out, called emergency services etc and stayed until everything was sorted.  He then called round to our house later that evening in his own time to see how I was.  He wasn't even our postie at the time, but we knew him.  He's always whistling and happy (AND he loves Turkey!)  :D

If only all postmen were like him.   :)

Sorry off thread - just wanted to stick up for nice posties everywhere!   ;)

Thank you Albaman!   :)  I totally agree.   :)

We live in a small village, and the postie reminds me of how things used to be - everyone helping each other and looking out for each other.  I trust him 100%, as does everyone else.  He's a fabulous bloke.  I don't think he's "interfering with her majestys mail" one bit - he is out to help anyone he can, and to cause as little inconvenience as he can.   :)

He keeps an eye on any old folk on his round, and always has time for a chat before moving on.  There are not many people like him around any more, mores the pity.   ;)

Was in the Fez bar last night and signed the petition which is doing the rounds in support of posty. For people who would like to add support I have been reliably informed that you can also sign a petition in the pharmacy next door to Billys bar {English bar} in the village.
I concur with KKOB as to the various stories circulating in regard to the alleged offence, however the overall opinion seems to be that posty is the fall guy.I for one am not a great believer in petitions, but I do think that if enough people, both Brits and Turks show enough support for the guy then hopefully the authorities may take notice.

Saw the Postie the other day on his little postie bike, so it looks like he is back in the saddle.

No KKOB, it was definatly the old postie, as I have lived here fo 3 years, and have spoken to him numerously. Maybe he has got an assistant to help clear the backlog

The new postie looks very much like the old postie smallish with a moustache, as far as I know the old postie is in prison!!!

Definately a new postie.  Went down to collect my post today and he asked me to put our surnames into his address book for future reference. Seems a nice guy :)

There are actually 2 new posties in the village. One looks very much like the old one at a distance and the other one's quite a bit larger.
