Title: Sliding Mosquito Screen
Post by: bearcat on November 11, 2014, 21:58:44 PM
Is 300tl for a sliding door mosquito screen (white pvc - 2.3m high x 1.6m wide) expensive ?

We are not sure if we are getting genuine help from a "friend" who steps in to help us
or if they are helping themselves.

I need to cancel quickly if this price is much too high.

I would say it's VERY expensive.

I will try to renegotiate price at shop ... this time without my friend :-)

Have a look on the Saniye (Industrial Estate) opposite the Otogar. There are a couple of places on there that make and install them.

I'm also pretty sure that Ramazan in the wrought iron shop opposite Homeprof can get them done for you.

The problem is ... that the price was given over the phone, with our friend turning round and quoting the price back to us as he was interpreting from Turkish to English (we were standing in the shop, but the shop was empty and the guy was out working).

After, our friend dropped the price twice because we thought it too high, we said yes to this final price, so the screen may have already have been made in the day between.

It is just ... that I kept thinking that the price still seemed too high.

Besides the price , I would advice you to have something like the one on the picture next time if they can do it and you have enough space. I think these are more effective , as you push the door to open and mosquitoes already waiting on it will be pushed ( or pulled ) away and there is less chance for them to enter the house.

Also useful if you are carrying something out and and both your hands are full...

yes 300tl is at best double for what you are asking for.you should pay no more than 150tl for a very good one.

If you agreed the price I am not sure what you can do now.
Doesn't sound like a "friend" though

We have these fitted, they are brilliant, slide open than slide back into an cartridge which is only 8cm in width. From memory, about 150 lira.

In truth .... we were quoted for 2 white pvc mosquito door blinds.

One is a sliding blind (as the actual doorway has one fixed pane of glass and an opening door).

The other where the mosquito mesh is concertina within a door frame (as both the doors open), so we can still open both doors.

The initial opening price was 750tl for both (350tl for first door plus 400tl for second door).
We said no. So 700tl was offered,no again. So 650tl was offered. We went back to the shop the next day after posting on here and got it down to 600tl for both. So this is what we stuck with.

To me, it opens up the question as to whether it is usual practice for Turkish people to get involved on behalf of Brits and negotiate themselves a large fee. Especially as we had both gone down to this shop in separate cars and my Turkish friend was very keen to come to my next shop on my list, a cast iron stove shop. I think he was on to a bit of a loser there as all the prices were fixed. However, it was offered that I look at the Soba he had in his house at 800tl. Later that evening, a friend told me, they got one at 250tl. Which got me thinking I was being ripped off.

In August, we were quoted somewhere in the region of 440 lira for 2 door and 2 window nets. The ones for the door were the type that had to open out and not slide. We were just making an inquiry to get an idea of cost.
