(This post is not intended to debate whether the Honours List is a good thing or not)
I have nothing against the man personally but can someone explain to me why Jonny Wilkinson merits a knighthood more than Kenny Dalglish.
>:( >:( >:(
-
Jonny a young man and a Rugby player earns a lot of money. Kenny Dalglish an older man, played football, was a team manager and also works tirelessly for Cancer Charities and has raised a lot of money. He should be a Sir.
-
As I am sure you know Jacqui, Jonny Wilkinson also does good charity work.
I think that what Kenny did for the city of Liverpool and the survivors and their families in the immediate aftermath of and since Hillsborough merits recognition.
-
I have no idea about what either of these gentlemen have done or haven't done for charity but they actually have to be nominated for an award in order to even be considered. Somebody somewhere actually has to write the letter of nomination with the supporting letters/references etc from other people.

Taking into account there ages, I would say Kenny has been doing Charity work for a lot longer.

Wilkinson spent a large part of his career out of the game through injury.
Perhaps it was for THAT last minute kick.?,
Off topic, but why did Sheridan Smith get an O.B.E.? The Awards are becoming meaningless.
-
Sheridan Smith has got to be one of the best young female actors in the UK at the moment. Her acting is superb. If you saw her in the biopic of Cilla you would know what I mean. She has won several awards for her stage performances and has done a lot of work for charities behind the scenes. Well worth it in my opinion.
As Lynne said, people have to be nominated. If no one nominates then no award. The question also has to be asked, has Dalglish been nominated in the past but refused an award? Many people have refused awards over the years.
-
The Awards are becoming meaningless.
My memory must be failing; I can't recall any time when they were meaningful.
-
They should scrap these awards. If you are involved in charity work then it should be from the heart, and not to gain some idiotic meaningless title.
-
The Manager of our local Cancer Research Shop got the M.B.E. last year and it was not meaningless for her. She has worked for this organisation for 22 years despite suffering from crohns disease and other illnesses herself. She is only around 6 stone in weight and has both her arms strapped up to strengthen them.
I don't think I have ever seen anyone work so hard behind the scenes of the shop. This is the sort of person that should be honoured and not pop stars and actors.

Well, well well
Turns out it's all a mix up.
Off topic but well deserved award for poppy ceramic artist Paul Cummins in my opinion.
-
I have known, and worked with, two knights of the realm. One I considered very competent, straightforward and "a good bloke". The other I considered a crook. The second was in the most senior position in our organization which he left for an even more high profile position in another organization - taking his booty with him (allegedly).

Dr Simon Campbell, the creator of Viagra is Up for a gong for all his Hard work. A master Stroke I would say. ;) ;)
-
I think that award would stand up to scrutiny. There were other nominations; but they weren't stiff competition.
-
I may be wrong but I think he is being awarded the O.S.P. with a ribbon. :)
-
slightly off topic how do you relate with donating money to charities who employ people on mega salaries
-
I once worked with a local councillor whilst serving on several school governing bodies. This particular councillor always advertised in the local papers how he would not send Christmas cards but would donate to local charities instead and listed the charities and the amounts he would donate! One year, several of the schools received letters from his wife asking for nominations for an award and giving details of how to nominate. If they didn't respond, another letter, from his wife, was sent. I personally saw several of these, reminding how a nomination could be made. He got his OBE. A few months later he was being held in police custody for taking bribes for building permissions to be passed. He was chairman of that committee. I rest my case. Incidentally, his safe apparently had several envelopes containing bank notes from folks who had recently requested and been allocated Building permissions.

Jacqui, for what it may be worth, could you please pass on my gratitude to this lady for her devotion to Cancer Research ? Thank you.

Now thats what I call a great big THANK YOU. It as a nice personal feel. Far better than any piece of paper or merit badge handed out by a totally disconnected and distant system. You can had my gratitude also Jacqui.

Wilkinson won the world cup.. Daglish didn't..simples. And I know nothing of, nor do I favour, egg chasing.
Having said that the awards system is a lot of establishment nonsense, wrapped in medieval patronage, underpinned by a flawed empirical past and worst of all celebrity. Drop the lot, especially Knighthood and worst of all the anti democratic peerages .... scrap it all. Introduce a modern system that reflects a country looking forward, not back. >:( >:(
Order of Lenin all round... ;)

To Gordon and Tiggsy, Thank you I will pass on your good wishes. I know she, will secretly be happy, but she never takes any compliments easily, she is that sort of person. Sadly, she is taking early retirement this year, she had now hurt her back and after an operation, needs a stick to walk and the stairs to above the shop are difficult for her. She will be missed by us all. I hope someone just as good will fill her shoes.
