The value of TL seems to be slipping down again this morning.
According to xe.com at 9am it was at 7.11 to the £ and 5.802 to the $
It had fallen as low as 6.38 to the $ on the Asian markets when they first opened this morning in what was described as a 'flash crash'.
https://ahvalnews.com/turkish-lira/turkish-lira-briefly-drops-10-percent-asia-flash-crash
-
Iv just popped on here to see if any recent posts about the tl as a I noticed on Xe Friday it was slipping/rising as to why this may be ..At 5.30 this morning Xe was showing 7.17...
-
Despite the £ taking a dive today because of the potential suspension of parliament by the UK government, the TL is still hovering around 7.10 / £
-
They were only offering 6.8 in Dikmans in Fethiye
-
Just wondering what the exchange rate is at the moment. Thanks
-
At XE.com it's 7.11 so probably around 6.90 in Calis.
-
After today's announcement by Trump that he'll totally destroy and obliterate" Turkey's economy if the country does anything that he does not like in Syria, it's going to be another unstable time for the value of the TL. It slipped from 7.04 this morning to 7.16 this evening.
Mrs KKOB and I are off to Istanbul next Monday and we're watching the money markets more closely than ever. :)
-
7.34 this morning
-
7.43 now. Not sure what it is at exchange shop though.
-
The pounds jumped up against most currencies today.
-
7.43 now. Not sure what it is at exchange shop though.
7.10 in change shop tonight
-
A classic example of how stupid the question " I am coming over in a fortnight what is the exchange rate ?" is. ;) ;) ;)
-
Be good to know rate at the minute arrive Wednesday and don’t know if best just to load on Revolut card
Or bring sterling with me current Revolut rate 7.45
-
It's anybody's guess at the moment DianaJ, but as I said above it was 7.10 at change shop last night, pretty sure it won't stay like that but will post again next time we're passing (probably tonight!) :D
-
The rate will almost always be better in Turkey. Best to get £50 - £100 changed into TL in the UK for the first few days and then use your Revolut card.

Absolutely right...I've had a few auto-exchange orders on my Revolut card and they've executed at 7.45 and 7.46...significantly better and if the rate keeps rising, I'll keep exchanging more.
-
Just got 7.43 from my Starling account ;)
-
The Doviz exchange offices in Istanbul were offering 7.56 yesterday afternoon.
-
7.64TL today as the £ hits highest rate in 31 months due to the lead taken by the Conservatives in the run-up to the election.
-
7.75TL on the General Election results.
-
The pounds jumped up against most currencies today.
Yes but I believe there’s been yet another interest rate cut in Turkey. That will have had an affect too.
-
Down to 7.80 on RTE's veiled threat to 'shutter' the Incirlik airbase used by the USAF and the Kürecik Radar Station.

-
7.88. Not a very promising start to the New Year for RTE.
-
7.797 at close of business today.
-
Good exchange rate for tourists BUT the price of flights and package holidays is till prohibitive for holidaymakers.
-
Although there have been no reported cases of coronavirus in Turkey, the TL closed on Monday at 7.95 on fears of the impact of the virus on the travel industry and restrictions being imposed around the world.
-
Hit 7.9974 earlier today before returning to 7.65 ish

(7.95ish) :)

Oh jeez
7.965 ish
:D

After the £ plunged to a 35 year low against the USD because of the effects of COVID-19 the TL rallied to 7.505
-
What I don't get is why the £ is so weak against the dollar, euro etc with the Coronavirus being blamed. All these other countries have it too, why is it us slipping?
-
Because our stock market has less faith in British businesses and the USD has always been the 'go to' currency in emergencies ?
I really don't know how it all works.
-
It's because the markets and in particular the money markets have no faith in johnson or his farcical attempts to combat the covid-19 crisis.
-
So, what would you suggest the PM does then ?
-
Johnson and the government are in a no win situation dammed if you do dammed if you don’t, the political points scoring hasn’t even started yet
-
Surely the problem is that Johnson has neither done or not done anything. Totally rudderless ship. You shouldn't do this, but we won't stop you. Pathetic "leadership".
-
A new low 8.208
-
Omg 8.30 now!

Turkish lira may weaken to 8 per dollar, says Japan’s largest bank. So, it could easily fall to 9 to the £.
https://ahvalnews.com/turkish-lira/turkish-lira-may-weaken-8-dollar-says-japans-largest-bank
-
We know that Turkey is not one of the 81 countries that have so far applied to the IMF. Which makes sense, given Erdoğan’s distaste for the institution. He will turn to the IMF only when it becomes obvious not only to economists, but to himself and Albayrak as well, that there is no other route.
https://ahvalnews.com/turkey-economy/toxic-sunset-cocktail-over-turkish-economy
When / if Turkey's application is finally made, will it get priority ? Or will it have to get inline behind the other 81 ?
-
While the value of the £ fell on the news of Boris Johnson's health crisis, the TL slipped even further to 8.33

And the TL hits 8.50
-
Thinking about ordering now. What does everyone else think?
-
It gone to 8.505 now.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if it reached 9.00 in the next couple of months. But now would be as good a time to order as any.

Well, I didn't want to be too
optimistic pessimistic. ;)
-
So should I buy now, am I even going in September?
-
Nobody knows.
-
Nobody knows, but generally the exchange rate is better tomorrow than it is today - or better next month than it is this month. Or better next year than it is this year.
Where “better” = more lira to the pound.
-
Actually by coincidence, 5 years ago today I grabbed the moment the TL first hit the outrageous level of 4/£.

-
A true case of Better being Worse being Better.
-
So should I buy now, am I even going in September?
I bought the other day at 8.50. £100 just to top up what I bought the other month.
If I’d waited for the price to go to 8.60 I’d have made an extra quid and a bit.
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose but unless you are buying thousands of pounds worth it makes very little difference really. 1 lira worth about 11.5p?
-
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose but unless you are buying thousands of pounds worth it makes very little difference really.
Quite right Stoop. But the value of the TL against the £, Euro and USD gives an indication of the world markets faith, or lack of faith, in Turkey and its government.
-
I bought at 7.5 a while ago & thought I got a bargain, I still think that, 7.5 is a great rate imho. Good luck to those getting more, my Efes will still taste the same :)
-

Agreed. In the scheme of things the extra few lira means very little. However for the Turkish people the decline of it's value could fuel even more inflation which is not good.
-
I suppose the exchange rate is only as good as the prices charged in the restaurants and shops when you’re there.

The Turkish government's struggle to mitigate the economic damage from the COVID-19 outbreak has failed. It has now adopted a policy which appears to aim to polarise the private and public banking sectors in order to pressure private banks to hand over more credit.

It is “just a matter of time” before the weakening lira and the low reserves lead to a crisis, said Nikolay Markov, senior economist at Swiss investment firm Pictet Asset Management,,,,
Some investors warned that depleted foreign currency reserves and negative interest rates may be a precursor to a full-blown financial crisis.
Anyone relying on interest from a Turkish bank account should be considering their future investment.
-
It was actually a year ago today that I posted the news that the rate had gone over 8.00.
Worst ever rate v the $ today too.
-
The £ isn't particularly strong at the moment. So it's the USD that's driving the TL down.

8.32 this morning. Slowly pulling back from the brink.
The Turkish authorities have been in talks with several countries to secure swap lines, officials of the Treasury and Finance Ministry said this week.
The lira climbed by more than 1 percent on Tuesday after the Habertürk news website said Ankara was very close to signing swap deals with Japan and the United Kingdom worth a total of $20 billion.

Sounds wonderful but the Turks won’t lose so their prices fluctuate with the exchange rate.
-
The Turks certainly will lose massively from a weak lira - not sure how you worked that one out.
-
I do hope it's another short-lived blip like the one in 2018, It's The last thing the people of Turkey need at the moment.
-
I agree MrT but the word on the Sokak is that the Turkish government is heading towards devaluing the TL, which will accelerate massively the trend seen recently and close countless Turkish businesses forever.
As it stands let’s be clear - the Turkish lira has lost nearly 5% just this week, and a full third of its value in the last year.
-
So glad we got our money out. It would have lost us £17,000 more in exchange.
-
Hit 9.169 earlier :o

9.208 this morning.
-
9.02 to 9.26 in the last 24 hours, this is very serious...
-
Reggie'll sort it. Another day, another sacking. :)
-
Very probably.
The TL has lost 2.46% in the last 24 hours. To put that in other terms, if you had £100,000 in TL in the bank, you lost around £2,700 pounds today alone.
-
Another drop to 9.35 this morning. Your £100,000 would have lost a further £940 or so.
-
In other trades gold is up 65% on the lira in one year. While it has a fascination watching a currency as volatile as the lira I often wonder what decisions the typical one man or one woman business owner makes regarding holding lira, buying FX or gold. It can't be far short of a continuous nightmare.

Of course Reggie's now going to blame the Turkish Central Bank for hiking the interest rate by 2 percentage points last week.
-
Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said he does not look at the lira’s value against major currencies.
“The exchange rate is not important to me, I’m not looking at it,” Albayrak said. “Our manufacturing industry is strong. The exchange rate is now in our hands.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called on the country’s citizens to boycott French products as anger in the Muslim world intensified over French President Emmanuel Macron’s comments on Islam.
“I am calling on my nation, do not buy French products,” Erdoğan said in a televised speech at the presidential palace in Ankara on Monday.
Given that France is among the few countries which Turkey maintains a trade surplus with and the country’s exports to France total $7.9 billion while imports register at $6.8 billion it'll be interesting to see if Reggie's latest spat will have further detrimental effects on the value of the Turkish Lira.

10.75 TL at 08.02 this morning; guessing the recent news that Germany has closed all travel to Turkey hasn't helped, either.
Do I load up on TL or will it slide further? Hmmm...
-
I don't think it'll make much difference for the short-term as the season's ended. Depends on whether and when they lift the advice for the start of next year.
It's just gone to 10.8154. Might be worth taking a punt on a few hundred quids worth of TL as a long-term investment. Depends on how much further you think the TL's likely to fall before / if it recovers.
-
I bought some Tl a couple of months ago just to keep until we could get over there again because the rate was so good - at the time. Got 9.24 and thought it wouldn't get much higher!
Always a risk but by the time we get out again there's no telling what it might be : :)
-
Always a risk because for 10 years in a row, buying Lira for next year has been a disastrous idea

Well I didn't spend more than I could afford to lose even if gamble didn't pay off. At least I'll have a bit of spending money when we go. Maybe enough for a efes ;)

Exactly daveG. Not been away since our month in Calis last October so have a whole year's holiday budget waiting to be spent ;) A lot to catch up on when we can get away : :)

Thanks KKOB...your advice is always helpful. Unfortunately, I still pay fees monthly and have taxes to sort every six months, so always have a few hundred pounds of TL in the Revolut account to cover essentials. Thank heavens I'd paid up my DASK and household insurance, given the Izmir earthquake Fri/Sat. (prayers and best wishes to those affected on both sides of the Aegean sea)

10.60 this morning.

Looking short lived today...
-
The new Finance Minister, Lütfi Elvan, isn't the man the markets were hoping to see take over.
Elvan is another Erdoğan loyalist who was appointed as minister of transport, maritime and communication in December 2013 following a corruption scandal that forced a cabinet reshuffle.

They must be warming to him :D

Turkey’s central bank increased its benchmark interest rate to 15 percent. Monetary policymakers hiked borrowing costs from 10.25 percent, the central bank said in a statement on Thursday.

It may be at this level for few a days because of the end of Ramadan. And then it could go either way !

Never banked with Garanti but used their currency page for years as a constant reference point

Kevin, are you sure you're looking at it the right way ?
For instance, I bank with Yapi Kredit and they're offering to Buy @ 11.6606 and to Sell @ 12.1509
So it's 11.606 TL to the £ but f you want to buy £'s it'll cost you 12.1509TL/£

Still reasonably stable at around 11.90 but look out for a sudden drop to 12.20-ish in the next few days.
-
I think you could be wrong there. The experts are predicting a recovery, with interest rates remaining stable and Covid restrictions easing and it looks like the recovery has started today.
-
Yes, there's a bit of a recovery due to the lifting of Covid restrictions but there's concern in the money markets about the return of 'Global Inflation' and the fact that Turkey has very little left in the coffers to fight it.
Fingers crossed for the Turkish people.
-
Well, it was good to see that my prediction of a further tumble for the TL didn't happen.
BUT, it's just been announced that "Turks increased their holdings of foreign currency in bank deposits, signalling renewed concern about the stability of the TL. Some Turks are also switching their savings into foreign currency because returns from bank deposits in TL are barely covering the erosive effects of inflation."
Whilst the majority of us on this forum are interested in the value of the £ against the TL it's really all about the value of the TL against the USD, and to a lesser extent the Euro, that drives the markets these days.

@KKOB, you usually have a good take on currencies...
-
The consensus in the money markets is that Turkey's central bank needs to maintain or even raise interest rates, whilst the 'Glorious Leader' is insisting that rates should be lower. I think we all know where that's leading. ;) Anyone for Musical Chairs ? :)
-
Seems that I was a bit premature with my prediction of the TL going to 12.20 last week but, unfortunately, it's now heading that way.
I've posted the entire article from Ahval as I know that members in Turkey can't access it without using a VPN.
Turkey’s lira hit an all-time low against the dollar and euro on Friday on concerns about lax monetary policy and ahead of hefty foreign currency debt repayments.
The lira fell 1.1 percent to 8.59 per dollar, beating a previous record of 8.58 per dollar set in early November. It dropped to 10.46 against the euro.
The embattled currency has slumped 16 percent since mid-March, when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sacked the head of the central bank the day after he raised interest rates. Since then, foreign investors have sold billions of dollars of Turkish stocks and bonds on fears that the bank will cut rates of 19 percent prematurely.
Inflation in the country accelerated to 17.1 percent in April, the highest level in major emerging markets outside of crisis-hit Argentina, which is implementing an International Monetary Fund rescue programme.
“Each burst of depreciation risks triggering a fresh lira crisis as it begins to feed back into higher inflation, which the central bank cannot fight off because it is unable to credibly hike rates,” Tatha Ghose, senior emerging markets economist at Commerzbank, said in a report to investors.
On Thursday, the World Bank urged Turkey to keep monetary policy tight, saying it was the only way for the government to ensure strong and sustainable economic growth. The central bank kept interest rates at below inflation for much of 2020 to help the government engineer a borrowing boom via state-run banks.
"The outlook this year is very uncertain and hinges on the course of policy ... especially monetary policy and the effectiveness of COVID control measures," World Bank senior economist David Knight said at a panel discussion, referring to rising global inflation and a switch to tighter U.S. monetary policy, according to Reuters.
Economists are predicting that new central bank governor Şahap Kavcıoğlu will cut interest rates this year even as inflation remains in double digits, according to a monthly central bank survey. Kavcıoğlu has said he will keep rates at above realised and expected inflation, without providing further details.
Erdoğan, who has sacked three central bank governors in less than three years, says high interest rates are inflationary, an unorthodox theory that has won sympathy from Kavcıoğlu, who had no experience in central banking before accepting the job.
Global inflation is also accelerating as countries emerge from the pandemic. That has pushed up U.S. bond yields, prompting investors to pull capital from more fragile emerging markets such as Turkey. Losses for the lira are increasing the cost of Turkey’s imports, fuelling inflation further.
The lira’s losses are being compounded by locals buying dollars ahead of large foreign currency debt repayments, Bloomberg reported, citing two traders who asked not to be named. Turkish companies are due to repay or roll over $6.9 billion of foreign currency loans in June, central bank data shows.
The lira, which has lost more than half its value since 2018, is also weakening during renewed political uncertainty. Opposition parties are calling for early elections after a mafia boss made allegations of underworld links against government officials including the interior minister. Erdoğan has responded, saying presidential and parliamentary elections will take place as planned in 2023.
International credit agency Standard & Poor’s was due to review Turkey’s junk ‘B+’ debt rating later on Friday. The market is pricing Turkey two notches below S&P’s rating in the debt swaps market, Reuters said.

A group of U.S. lawmakers published a letter on Thursday calling on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) to work with global partners in a sustained and coordinated effort to hold accountable the Turkish government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for repeated violations of religious freedom and human rights.

Turkey’s lira extended a record low on Friday even after consumer price inflation slowed for the first time in eight months and the central bank pledged tight monetary policy.
The currency’s renewed weakness - it has hit successive all-time lows over the past week - reflects the doubts Turks feel over the economic outlook and the accuracy of inflation data. Foreign investors are also fleeing Turkish markets, pointing to political interference in monetary policy.

There's a NATO meeting in Brussels on Monday between Reggie and Uncle Joe at which it's hoped by investors in Turkey that Reggie will offer to either send the Russian missile defence system back or to mothball it.
“The danger is that if it does not happen, this could turn ugly quite quickly the other way.” said Tim Ash, senior emerging markets strategist at Blue Bay Asset Management in London.
