Betfred Won't Pay Out to Olympic Star's Granny...
« on: August 23, 2012, 19:14:06 PM »
Shameful!!!

Family pride wasn't the only reason Linda Aldred was elated to see her grandson Sam Oldham win a surprise bronze medal in men's gymnastics at the London Olympics.

The 66-year-old from Ramsgate also had made a lucrative bet before the Games began that Oldham would take home a medal. Aldred placed a £5 bet at 200-to-1 odds with Betfred in honour of her late husband and Oldham's grandfather, Eric, whom she described as "a betting man."

She attempted to cash in her bet after the Olympics, but bookmakers said they wouldn't pay her the £1,000 she thought she was due because Oldham's medal came in the team competition rather than as an individual.

Happy Ending

UK bookmaker Betfred has finally agreed to pay out to the grandmother of Olympic medallist Sam Oldham after she bet that he would win a medal at the London 2012 Olympics.

Betfred
became embroiled in a media storm after it refused to pay out on the £5 bet at odds of 200/1 to Oldham’s grandmother, Linda Aldred, because her bet was on him winning a medal as an individual when he won the bronze medal as part of the team event in the gymnastics.

Aldred believed she had won £1,000 but when she went to claim the bet she was told that because he had won the medal as part of the team she was unable to be paid for the bet.

News of this story hit the media and created some negative publicity for
Betfred leading to the bookmaker giving in and admitting that paying out to Aldred on the bet was the “right thing to do”.

I hope she enjoys her trip to Rio 2016.
