This is quite a provocative piece of writing, especially to people with day to day experience of living/visiting this country. As with all personal perspectives, it is only one persons view backed up by some extent facts and by personal views by other people.

You get hints that the writer is as nervous as kitten anyway.  Comments such as:

"I was jumpy during my first few months here too – every low flying plane or loud noise set my heart racing." and;

"I’ve been having mini-heart attacks following loud noises in London since the terrorist attacks of July 7 2005. "

So this is hardly a truly unbiased view from an unbiased person.

However, the article finishes quite positively:

"The longer I'm in Ankara, the less I worry." and;

"Ankara is a fairly safe city. Unlike London, there is little street crime. If you absent-mindedly leave your phone on the table in a bar, more often then not, it will still be there when you get back."

As regards being accosted on the streets, you women should never think about living in the UK, especially in or around Worcester:

Definitely.  I had to reread it as my first impression was that the author was American  :)

Living in Ankara (especially in Kavak) is an excellent way to not see the real Turkey.
