I am prepared to be shot down in flames on this and I am not normally controversial but I wish that people visiting the village as holidaymakers wouldn't walk through the centre of the village in Bikini Tops and no shirts on. This is a relatively small village in a Moslem country country and I wish people would realise it. It is not the sea front at Calis or Olu Deniz. I know it is really hot at the moment but some of the old men nearly choked on their cay. That is my moan for the year.
-
I won't shoot you down - I agree with you! I also wish they would cover up when in the restaurants as well. Nothing more off putting that a sweaty body opposite you as you try to enjoy your meal.
-
Me too! Nothing worse than a big fat yob, half naked and covered in tattoos, :o wandering around followed by the husband and kids.

Phil - totally agree. We've always instilled in Lottie the importance of respect for the turkish culture and she even covers up when Ibrihim or other Turkish visitors arrive when she is by the pool. (I just tighten the marquee around me knees a little...!). It doesn't take a lot of thought.....just consideration and respect for others :(
-
Much to the annoyance of our kids we always insisted that they cover up when out in public. I can only hope that when they visit Turkey in the years ahead that this remains the case.
-
i also agree, especially when eating
-
Some people have no sense at all. Its bad enough to see them walking about wearing bikini tops outside the Mosque in Hisaronu or Fethiye, but even worse in a non touristy place like Uzumlu. Sadly I suspect those people don't read this site.

Possible they don't read at all 8)
-
Fully agree, tho of course difficult to enforce and must rely upon good sense and manners of holidaymakers, especially those who read this site.An idea would be for restaurant owners to display signs to the effect that people must be suitably attired,as suggested.
-
No gun here Phil, I agree with all above comments.
-
Totally agree Phil, we too get very annoyed and embarrssed when we see this kind of thing in a small village. Maybe it could rest with the tour operators to remind people about there whereabouts when they do that welcome speel on the buses. Also common decency should tell you to cover up in these sorts of environments.
Sadly common decency is a rare thing these days amongst the younger generation.
-
It is really up to the owners of the bars/restaurants to politely ask the 'offenders' to cover up. My local is a bit of a dump now but they still do not allow bare chests and baseball caps. People are asked politely to remove/cover up and then asked to leave if they refuse.
A bit more difficult with those just walking around Uzumlu or any other area. They should know better really and should respect the local people but we all know this won't happen.

We both agree 100%, what we cannot understand is, why the parents of very joung girls encourage their children to dress as they do, in public places. Also why some of the old foggies like me, who's bodies have seen better day's feel the need to show the rest of us how bad they look undressed.
The Turkish teenagers whether strictly dressed or not always dress in a sensible and attractive manner, which puts our lot to shame.
But it is middle age group, ear ringed, tatood, overweight yobs and of course their male partners that really do cast us in a bad light.
-
My daughter has good name for these inconsiderate people .... BUSH DOGS! I saw a guy this morning walking back from the bakers with no tee shirt on .... expect he thought he looked good!
-
Bloody hell Phil I find myself agreeing with a Baggy in two posts now, but I do agree with you and it is even worse if the offenders are ex pats from the village, me I even cover up on my balcony when talking to my neighbour well said Phil. (And you still owe me a pint
Saw these four beauties in the village in June reckon they are BIG friends of yours Phil ;)

-

myself i never take my shirt off ,the wifes to prim and proper (bought the karma sutra for her and its still holdin the sideboard up)
i have no tattoos ,but my belly would cause a total eclipse of the sun
shoot em all
;)

Can these people use their Giro's in Turkey.???
:) :) :)
Agree with all the other sentiments
-
The above picture reminds me of hen party we saw last year in Hison, the turkish waiter where we were eating was laughing at the look on my face, the attire matched the verbals, really bad, and there must have been 20 of them, and sickening to listening to older women speaking to young turkish lads in a sexual crude way, in front of their daughters,
-
The one on the left looks a cutie. FT if you bring your four friends over when you come back we'll have a night on the town and I'll buy you that drink. I'm gratified that so many people agree with me I thought I was turning into a sad old man, sorry a sadder old man, I thought I'd get that one in before some of my so called friends commented.
-
Not sad Phil, we agree totally with you.
I passed a young couple last week, she in bikini top and mini sarong and him footy shorts and no top strolling down towards the garage. They would not walk around like that in their own towns but the sun seems to make them think that it's acceptable to do so here.
I was soooo tempted to stop and politely point out the error of their ways but thought best not as I didn't know how they would react. 8)
It's just a case of respect that those people who do this do not understand.:(

Whilst I agree with some of what you say, these people are on holiday!, it's hot and the first thing you do is strip off.
They dont live here and they havent aclimatised as we have Phil.
I agree in bars, restaurants and supermarkets they should cover up a bit more for health reasons as well as respect for the Muslim population.
I was on Olu Deniz beach today 8) and there were topless women there who should never be allowed to go topless and I got to thinking maybe a lisence be issued when you enter the beach for going topless:D also for the guys wearing budgie smugglers and thongs :-\,shouldn't be allowed!!!
and that male belly dancer at Sugar Beach, it ain't natural I tell ya:D
Tinx ;)

On our last trip we ate out in a nice bar at Fethiye harbour. Within a couple of minutes of us sitting down the next door table was hijacked by a group of middle age 'Jerry Springer rejects'. The 'ladies' (and I use the word liberally !) in bikini tops and the tatooed beer-bellied men naked from the waist up - sweating in bucketfuls. Our lunch suddenly lost its appeal !!
-
Having the Union Jack as a fashion emblem in Turkey is almost as bad!

Oh, it was you on the next table to us, if I`d known I would have said hello : :)

I always say if you wouldn't walk around your own town in what you'd wear on holiday, then why do it in someone else's town? AS for being a muslim country, I agree that we should be modest and respectful of their culture which includes dress code.
-
Unless of course you're a Turkish barman.!!
:) :)
-
I totally agree... respect and all that for others... It is not nice anyways and certainly out of place away from beach...
Was at Dalaman last night.. Yuk. fat gross english guy tatoos and all etc for all to enjoy in the restaurant area.. Not trhat I was eating there... It was sooooooo gross... him and food not to mention off reality prices...

Sorry I have no sympathy. If they are hot they can still wear light clothing that looks decent, and maybe hats to protect them from the sun. : :)

Have you ever heard the Muslims complain about it?
or is it a fear by you of what they are thinking?
-
In Spain I wouldn't parade past their churches/walk about in town wearing a bikini. Likewise in the UK I wouldn't parade about semi naked unless I was on a beach. No fear in it.
Some Muslims prefer women to be covered. This country has a wide range of styles of dressing. I would be surprised though if they approved of half naked women and men moseying about their town and outside their Mosques.
Has anyone asked a cross section of Turks? Not that it will make any difference to what happens, people will continue to dress they way they always have.

I have heard of women in Egypt being spat on for wearing short skirts.
Ok ,Turkey is more liberal but there is still the matter of respect. Keep it for the beach.
-
You go to any resort town in England and people will be walking around semi naked around the town.
-
if you go to any northern town they walk around like that at midnight:D
-
Whilst I do agree with the sentiment, if it is not against the law (topless sunbathing is), who are we to try and dictate what people wear (or don't wear), freedom of choice still exists even in Turkey.
Don't forget, if you have a garden or a swimming pool that can be seen from a public place you are commiting the same "crime" if you have your shirt off or are in a swim suit.
Baz 8)
-
Totally agree, a bit of respect for local customs.
It's rather sad that there are one or two expat residents who walk around the village with no shirt etc as well.

Dictate is rather a strong word.....
-
If you want to respect the muslims you also need to ban alcohol as well.:D.
Baz 8)
-
yeh, right, you tell that to my turkish neighbour to adores a secret tipple of wine.....(most nights !) :o:D
-
and also secretly likes looking at the half dressed young ladies:D
-
And do we ask the Turkish lads to wear their t-shirts as well, cos most of the ones i saw today were all walking about bare chested. Alan
-
But probably not looking as though they were carrying 28lb of potatoes and a handful of live ferrets where there stomachs should be.:D

-
Simple...Beachwear is for on the beach...Off the beach it's called underwear!
Caz
-
Too true blue!!!
-
Does having respect for the Muslim faith stop at the beach then?
-
Respect only applies to clothing tinx, alcohol/bars is a different story:D

-
mankini,s are the answer! :o walking around the beach area in bikini top not too bad, covered in a restaurant though. only seen 1 girl this year who had pushed it abit far, walkin round the shops in a piece of string on her bottom half(well inbetween it!), and i mean STRING! was embarrased for her!! :-\

Well said :)
-
A group of topless ladies sat next to us on Olu Beach last month - my daughter was all for going to ask them to cover up and sat moaning about having to look at them all day ! We didnt say anything, but have since wondered if we should have done. What would you have done ? (Strangely, Mr Pookie didn't seem to mind so much ;):D: :).....!!
-
There are differing levels of showing respect here, where does it end?
Walking around town, in bars and restaurants, around your own swimming pool or down at the beach?
or just when it suits us to use it as an excuse for seeing things we personally dont like and nothing to do with respect.
Tinx: :) ;)
-
Nearly put white socks on with my sandles this morning,:D there are somethings you just dont do:( . as already stated tourist beach area is a bit different from prancing around Uzumlu half naked :P .Calvin :)
-
Calvin, Don't get into the socks with sandals thing, that is a whole new debate. Question:- Has a man moved into the realms of old age when he wears socks with his sandals? Apart from Calvin are there any other forum members who admit to wearing socks and sandals? How about you Andy!!!
-
Sorry not me:D lets have a competition for a photo of members wearing socks and sandals ;)
-
Got nothing against sandals or white socks...but don`t like to see socks stuffed in thongs and walking down Uzumlu High Street...so please refrain from such conduct,Calvin!
-
What's wrong with white socks and brown leather sandals? together with my union jack knee length shorts, white shirt (buttoned up to the neck of course) and a cream beany hat, I think I look quite dapper. Must have a folded copy of a 2 day old Sun under your arm though.

I haven't even got a pair of socks in Turkey 8) Loads of sandals. As for the topless girls at Olu beach I'd probably have took a nice photo of the sea just behind them :D
-
How about a photo competition for the most nauseous amount of exposed flesh on display Has to be taken in this area.....the prize.... Well a six pack of course: :):D
-
One of the funniest we;ve ever seen was a really large lady walking down Calis front in he Cozzy, it was a silver one and the reflection from the sun nearly blinded everyone, we nick named her Bernard (Mathews) but good on her, she thought she looked ok,:P
-
u right actually phill. i agree with u. this is the small village n there is no sea around. well local peoples understand them they in holiday but still shouldnt be like that anyway...
