Title: Creepy crawlies...........
Post by: citywire on October 04, 2009, 19:34:52 PM
While out in July we hired a car for a couple of days and had nice lunch in the Istanbul restaurant in Kaya.

As we left the restaurant, turn right we saw a huge black snake (approx 3/4 feet) wriggling along the road and up over a wall and heading back into the back of the Istanbul.   Glad I had had my lunch already:D

Anyone else had a close encounter of the reptile kind?

In the 2 1/2 years we have lived here we have had, so far, in our garden;

6 - scorpions
1 - snake, about 1m long brown in colour
3 - hedgehogs
3 - tortoises
dozens of frogs
dozens of camel spiders
dozens of ghekos

But no problems..........yet:D[?]

I've been stung 3 times by Scorpions. We've had over 30 in the house.

Had several encounters with snakes. Only had to kill one, an Ottoman Viper, which was attempting to take one of our ducklings.

We were finding and numbering tortoises on our land with Tippex and nail varnish during the first year we were here. We gave up bothering after number 67.

We've got at least 4 resident Ghekos and several more trying to get in at night.

Being surrounded by wetlands we've had literally thousands of frogs and toads.

We've had a couple of bats flying about indoors.

Seen 3 chameleons in the garden.

The cat has brought us several "presents", all still alive, including several sparrows, a large green lizard, an agama ( a type of lizard ), mice, dormice, rats.

Also had a couple of dozen or so hedgehogs. Benson seems very adept at tracking them down and has a special bark that he uses when he finds one.

Wow!!  KKOB you certainly have had your fair share of encouters with the animal kingdom.  The only thing that confuses me is "Tortoises....with...NAIL VARNISH" !!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D

Did they get the dolmus down from Hisaronu main street after a night at Talk of the Town?

I was out walking in the forest when I saw a large green snake with a pattern on its back. I leaped up on to a rock in fear and kept very still and hoped it would go away. It did not move so I looked at it a tiny bit closer and realised it was a piece of rope which somebody had dropped!:D

:D:D Daffodil, that made me smile !!

Us country bumpkins up in the hills, seem to have a lot more creepy crawlies than you townies down in Calis, so i would all worry too much.  Just invest in a good sturdy pair of wellies !

I am totally amazed, are there really camel spiders in the Fethiye area?  Are they just around Kaya?  and are they the same spiders that have been featured in lots emails that are doing the rounds where soldiers are saying what a problem they are?  Please tell me they are not the same.
I thought the little jumping spiders where bad enough without these monsters.  This is a piece about them that was sent to me  recently
