I've recently 'discovered' Lynyrd Skynyrd. Yes I was aware of their anthem 'Sweet Home Alabama', but I've recently been listening to some of their other work too, and have been impressed, particularly with the track 'Tuesday's Gone'. So I was wondering why I missed them before, particularly in the 70s? Although I suppose you can't hear 'em all!!
So who have you 'discovered' musically in recent years, that you perhaps missed the first time around?

As detailed in another scintillating CBF music topic, I almost entirely missed Pink Floyd first time around. What I knew was a little Dark Side of the Moon, as my dad played it on a Saturday morning - an irritating way to be woken really - money or clocks, welcome to the weekend. I knew the album cover of Animals as my dad's hifi was in a clear glass cabinet and the pig/Battersea Power Station cover was 1st left through the glass. I recall the single "Another Brick in the Wall" but not particularly the album "The Wall" which in recent weeks has almost my entire music attention.
I couldn't have told you the name of any band member, album (other than the two mentioned) and I do feel that I missed this first time around...

Neil Young for me ! - I liked the Single "Heart of Gold" upon it's release, and aware of friends at the time raving about the album "Harvest", and the magical poetry of "After The Goldrush" made popular as a cover by Prelude. It wasn't until much later I delved deeper into the music of Mr. Young and discovered just how influential he was as one of the great North American troubadours (and a half decent guitarist to boot !! ;) ) of the early seventies.
Here's a little "rocker" from Glastonbury 2009 for your delectation ! :)

Nice to see an "old boy" having fun ! ;) :)

For me got to be Van Morrison
When I meet my husband in '83 he was huge a fan ....I have been to so many of his concerts I have lost count
Now I am a big fan some of his albums are my all time favourites

Gary Moore and also Santana... Love them both to pieces now, so sad that Gary is no longer with us.
-
Spot on Valleyboy, not so young now and some health problems to overcome but one of my fave's
Followed him from Buffalo Springfield days
Jacqui, I remember buying Abraxas by Santana on vinyl, these recording artists are legends. Will any of the increasing number of boy bands be around in 40 years ? :(

I feel very old reading this, because I didn't miss any of the above the first time around. The area that passed me by was punk!! Too busy having children at the time. Did I miss anything good?

Big Star (#1 Record) -1972
Love (Forever Changes) - 1967
A couple of cracking albums by groups I didn't pay any attention to first time around, although 1967 was a bit early.
Enjoy!

And before I forget, Frank Zappa (Joe's garage)
-
Frankie Valli & the 4 seasons. Totally off my radar in the 70's, but now (with TV advertising) on my play list.

I was thinking about this topic today. Another complete miss of mine was ELO and particularly Jeff Lynne. To me at the time he was just a man with stupid hair, playing the celeb by continuously wearing those stupid sunglasses and talking in that (careful here...) Brummie accent :D
I know with age (and maturity? :P ) appreciate what a great songwriter he was/is and also what a ridiculously well talented producer he is.

I think what I am enjoying now is being able to actually go and see the heroes of my youth! I could never afford to go and see the most popular people at the time but I am loving the concerts now. Tonight I am off to see Barry Gibb......I am so excited!
-
Keith.
Re Jeff Lynne, if you search You Tube for clips of the Traveling Wilburys
and Concert for George (Harrison) there are some good clips of Jeff.
A very nice and humble Brummie sought after by top "stars"
Lynne
Enjoy tonight, can't beat the concerts. :)

Paul Weller. I couldn't stand the Jam and all his other subsequent groups but I think he is great now.. Oooh I wish I was going to see |Barry Gibb... saw the Bee Gees and they were amazing...
-
I was the opposite, loved The Jam and hated the commercial rubbish he came out with ever since :)
-
ah but you are much younger than me. Saw the documentary on Jeff Lynne last Saturday.. Brilliant man.. There is a documentary every Saturday night on a different "music hero" we have enjoyed them all except the Tom Jones one.. No idea which channel it is on because we are usually on our second bottle of wine by then...Going with Scunners recommendation tonight... The Australian Shiraz.
-
Documentaries are on BBC 4, usually around a theme or individual.
-
A band that I expect nobody has ever heard of "Rogue" their absolutely brilliant track "Fallen Angel" can any of you remember them?
-
Mercury, what numbers did The Australian Shiraz record.?
I'm just finishing my first bottle, :)
