I have been told told (think the story is about 10th hand so possibly wrong) that with the introduction of the 1 year residency permits now, if you have a turkish driving licence you have to go to traffic police every year to show new residency to stay legal??? Anyone else heard this or is it just more speculation

While it may, or may not be true, it does actually make sense - which would be a bit of a first for Turkish officialdom!
As far as I'm aware, having residency is a requirement of the driving licence therefore you need to show that you are still eligible to hold the driving licence.

I've no idea either but my best guess would be that because residency is a requirement of holding a driving license then the problem would only occur if you get stopped while driving and they find your residency has expired. To be honest, I'm not even sure traffic police can check residency status and on the couple of occasions I have been stopped and checked I've never been asked to produce my residency.

:-)
Hellzbellz its certainly wrong.
You need to renew your driving licence every 10 year. Same as any EU country.

Residency may be a requirement for obtaining a licence, but it certainly isn't a necessity to maintain one for 10 years.
