Firstly I realise Sunday is an important day for Turkey, if ur staying at a hotel like all inclusive on voting day are the rules no alcohol is to be served at all even in the evening when the votes are in? I have booked the Jiva as a suprise for hubby and whilst its not because we cant go without a drink for one day we would like to able to have a few cocktails in evening i never drink in the daytime anyway...cant believe some comments on a certain social media site when folk have asked like for gods sake its one day cant u go one day without a drink etc etc!

Even the tea gardens will be closed.
That said, never had an issue getting a beer on election days, either in Fethiye or Istanbul.
No idea about the Jiva, but you might find a "tip" goes a long way ;)

Talking to the guys in Bambu tonight and they won't be serving alcohol - they have had a visit from Police warning them they will be patrolling and will shut anyone down caught with alcohol served / consumed on the premises. Nasty comments on "the other place" I agree. I can certainly manage without a drink - as I do most days of the year - but I prefer not to have to. I can see where you are coming from if staying AI.
Hope nobody has a go at the bars though, clearly not their choice.

I guess there is a lot more fear this time around

Ok thanks for replies I totally forgot when i made the booking it is voting day, interestingly the price had come down loads but surely that cant be because of election...
Oh so it is sounding serious Bluwise re polis have visited Bambu and told them what will happen if they serve alcohol. Totally agree re lets hope folk dont have a go at bar owners, love the staff at Bambu, Firat so kind last summer he was mine and my son’s “go to” when we wanted to know anything like what are Turkish prisons like, but hey ho wont bore everyone with why we wanted to know that!

I've seen the police paying visits to lots of bars this week, warning the owners not to be serving alcohol on Sunday...
-
what happens if someone takes their own booze into a bar to have with their meal?
-
What about soft drinks if going out or have a beer in the house

No problem with either.. :)

If the police came calling, how could the restaurant prove that you'd brought it?

It's against the law to drink in public on election day.
-
You'll have to settle for Turkey's national drink which, according to an Erdogan pronouncement, is not raki - no, not at all - it is ayran!
-
So is inside a hotel classed as a public place? What time does the placing of votes end at?
-
Alcohol sales are banned from 6.00am until 12.00pm on the day....
-
You need to get into that 24 hour bar at 5am and stock up Karen :D
-
Ha ha Keith we cant check in until 2! I know it sounds like im a blooming alkie or sumat but I honestly could kick myself for not remembering about the election when I made the poxy booking!

We’re going from Fethiye to Rhodes for the day on Sunday, and we’ve topped up our room fridge with beer for when we get back in case we get the DTs when we get back 😏

Sooooo yesterday I thought I want to hear from the horses mouth the correct answer as some comments on “the other place” are quite frankly doing my headd in! Soo DRUMROLL! I got on my bike and cycled down to Jiva there is a lovely new chap working on reception, he told me this and made a phone call to clarify...” It is only our Turkish guests who can not have alcohol on Sunday” soo goodness knows how that is going to be policed!
-
Water cannons :D
Great news Karen. I too would have been gutted to have booked and found it to be dry that day.
-
Its the England world cup match on Sunday, the bars in Calis will be pretty full.
they ould lose a lot of trade NO BEER.

I suspect that the majority of visitors to Turkey have no idea how it works on election days in relation to the sale of alcohol.
In previous years most bars in the tourist areas started to sell alcohol as soon as the polls closed, and some prior to that. One year there were a lot of folks drinking beer out of paper Coca Cola cups in the Paspatur :)
The Polis and Zabita in Fethiye have usually taken a pragmatic view when it comes to tourists, alcohol and election day, a sentiment I suspect that came from above. Places like the Jiva, Letoon etc wont have many Turkish guests as traditionally Turks return to their home town/village city to vote.
I'd be surprised if the ban was rigidly enforced once the voting stations close, but then again, nothing about Turkey ever really surprises me any more so maybe it will!

But, on the bright side, think of the benefits. On study of election day alcohol bans found "alcohol bans caused substantial reductions in road crashes (15%), traffic-related injuries (30-70%), and traffic-related hospital admission."

Thanks Karen, I thought that was the case but it's hard to know what is and isn't true any more
-
Your welcome Nichola I just dont see how its going to work!
-
Personally I can't see alcohol not being served, by any means necessary
I'm sure the Polis and Jandarma have better things to do on election day than police the tourist bars and restaurants
-
Sooo on the beach bar at Jiva which is a fab new addition to the resort and more so now there is a toilet as well and a lovely decking area with bean bag seats there is a little laminate stuck on the bar in a few diff languages saying due to election day there will be no alcoholic drinks served at this bar, so folk are just going to the other bar inside the complex and bringing it over to the beach Turkish as well as Brits defo!
-
Where there's the will, there is a way ;) :D

Most bars served in either plain glasses or paler coffee cups. No problem at all. One bar even advertised 10 tl an Efes whilst the game was on.
