Alan Hansen on Match of the day

"England did well to get as far as penalties because the gulf in class between the two teams was embarrassing. Big hearts can only take you so far and I think the quarter-finals was the furthest England could go.

"Pirlo has unbelievable quality and England could not match him or Italy, and in 90 minutes the Italians were better in every department on the pitch and it shows you how far we are behind them.

"At international level, possession is king. In the group stages and tonight it was England's biggest frailty. It was a conveyor belt of misplaced passes."

Seems pretty accurate to me.

yes I watched trevor francis a few times when he was at Birmingham City... he was a good winger as they were called in those days .
yes I agree with Hansons comments above, an excellent summary... its just that I dont like the guy,,, just get the feeling he is never too far away from a mirror  :-)  but hey ho , its television, and  if he draws women viewers I suppose thats important too  :-)

Lets face it an English team wins the European Cup, but Chelsea is, like other English clubs full of foreign players.  All the English clubs fight to buy foreigners.  I think it's about time for clubs to concentrate on finding and bringing on British players and not opting for the easy option of buying abroad.
It's no wonder England cannot win anything.

Here's another thing regarding the penalties. Joe Hart allegedly spent many hours studying Italian penalties and knew everything there was to know no matter who took them. But didn't he go the wrong way three times.
