I haven’t managed to get out since June but gather a new mosque has been built - near The Pelin? I have a place near the cemetery/ old upside doiwn bridge. I haven’t seen anything much about it but was wondering if anyone can tell me exactly where it is and how loud the call to prayer is! I’m hoping to be able to get a good night’s sleep when I come again!
-
It’s next to the Tugay hotel.

They don't call to prayer through the night.
-
Our Apartment is near the tennis courts/971 sokak. There is wasteland opposite the tennis courts that's been left overgrown for the past few years. We often wonder what will become of it :- ???
-
Lots of complaints about the Mosque and how loud it is, on FB.
-
Maybe they’ll switch it off to please the British people who chose to holiday/live in a Muslin country.
-
We stay at the Tugay two months every year, the next time being May/June.
Whilst I love to hear the call to prayer, our room is really near the mosque, and we’re hoping the very early morning call isn’t too loud.
Never thought being slightly deaf would be an advantage!
-
Surely as Turkey is a Muslim country they are allowed to build a mosque where they choose.
I can just imagine the reaction in the UK if a Muslim community complained about a church being built near them.
-
Well said Scunner! Sorry being blunt but this thread really annoyed me helllooo its a muslim country that have mosques everywhere! Incidentally we live near the new mosque and we dont think its thats loud at all its defo never woken us up, my husbands snoring is louder then the mosque :(
-
Well I live in Spain so all this is none of my business but I am angry anyway
Outraged, Valencia
-
Typical British attitude.
We don't like / agree with this or that so let's have a moan 🙄
-
Sorry but I don't agree with you. ;)

Very well said Anne !!!!!
-
I love the Turkish people, and admire the fact that some of them pray five times a day when our churches are nearly empty.
However, being woken up before dawn every morning for four weeks would be, in my opinion, just cause for a bit of a moan. I’m not a good sleeper at the best of times, and fear I may not be able to get back to sleep.
Don’t want to stop them doing it, it’s their way of life and I respect their religious beliefs, but may have to change hotels.
-
Just a quick thought, isn't the call to prayer normally conveyed by the speakers on the lamp posts around the area? It certainly seems to be where we are.
If that is the case the volume should be fairly constant tough I admit it may be slightly louder if you are near one. Therefore it doesn't matter where the mosque is, as it will depend on the location of the speakers.
One last thought how many of the complainers on here moan about church bells in the UK?
-
The early morning call to prayer is one of the most evocative and biggest reminders of our love for Turkey.13-14 years ago was the first time I heard it one Summer morning,I got up and sat on our terrace,at peace with the world, sun rising, air warm, birds singing etc.I don’t think I had been so happy for a long time.
Very happy memories

I don't know Wendy but I'm pretty sure she is just asking for an answer to her question and you guys have hounded her in your replies as an insensitive brit who expects the world to adapt to her personal needs.
look at the facts.
1. she already has a home in Turkey so she is well aware of the culture.
2. The mosque wasn't there when she brought her property.
3. She not entirely sure where it is located, hence the question.
4. She asked how loud it is in location to her home.
5. she said she hopes to get a good night sleep when she gets to turkey which suggests she's may need some R and R and is worried she wont get it.
If someone was to ask the same question about how re routing the canal may effect their home flooding or a how a new hotel might be effecting their view would you all of been so critical?
Personally I love to here the call to prayer, but then I'm not right on top of a speaker.
And yes in the UK we don't complain about hearing church bells ...but then they don't ring at 5am!
Maybe someone can help Wendy if you haven't all frightened her off.
-
We have an apartment next door to navarda Spa and the speaker is on the lamp post
Right outside after day one you get used to the early morning call, you may not hear it near
Upside-down Bridge

I think you'll find the question was answered in the first couple of replies 😁

Might these be worth a go. Not sure if the Noise Reduction Ratio would be good enough.

We first got wind of the new mosque last June, when we noticed from our balcony that what had been a field with goats had foundations.
The owner of our hotel told us it was to be a men only mosque; he was angry about it, as there had been no consultation. Apparently, it was part of Erdogan’s plan to finance the building of mosques, which, together with the increased tax on alcohol and tobacco would cripple the tourist trade and put people off relocating to Turkey.
Our friends who live in Calis have sent us pictures of the completed mosque. A beautiful building it is, without the traditional dome. I’d love to see inside it, and if I can spot the imam, I may ask if we can have a look.
We have booked our room at the Tugay for May/June for four weeks, as I think we need to see how t is. I’m really hoping it’s going to be ok, as we love the hotel very much. We shall see, but fingers crossed.

Who is Wendy?
For the record I wasn’t responding to the original question, I was responding to the later post about there being a number of comments on Facebook from people who were not happy about the call to prayer/new mosque.
-
I'm sure like everyone else you'll get used to it Lyndsay.
Just have an extra nightcap or two and sleep through it 😁
-
Just to let you know Michelle.derek the Speaker on the Lampost at the Nevada Hotel has now been removed , so your early morning call is now in the distance from the new Mosque, a big improvement .
We lived right opposite this speaker and can confirm Turks and Brits thought it was loud , but all happy now .
-
Sorry Markar but I dont agree with you saying we have “hounded Wendy” re her question about the mosque, we have all said our own opinions/ experiences of said mosque and life would be boring if we all thought the same re certain subjects...I stick by what I said re the topic annoyed me purely because Turkey is a muslim country and the mosques are soo much part and parcel of Turkey...Wendy is probably far more likely going to be woken up at all hours of the night by the ever increasing poor animals barking their heads off or cats fighting at all hours, animals that have found themselves living on the streets thru no fault of their own
-
In answer to your question Wendy , yes , you will get a decent nights sleep . The speakers at the New Mosque are not that loud . Enjoy your stay on your return .
-
Once again it seems that someone has read something on Facebook and taken it as gospel.
I and many others have pointed out before that just because it is on Facebook. DOES NOT MEAN IT IS TRUE!
-
We had an Apt in Gunlukbasi and the mosque was approx. 100m from the apt, it didn't really bother, you may have heard call to prayer in the morning. You really do get tuned in and used to it. The mosque was there before we bought the apt so we knew the score on call to prayer etc. The only thing I didn't manage to see was the drummer during Ramadan, treid umpteen times but to no avail.

We had a mosque near to our apartment. It was very useful. It acted as our bus stop.

You have obviously never been out late/early enough 😂😂😂

I had him in my sights a couple of times but he was too quick for me. ;)
-
The call to prayer from the new mosque is very, very loud.
Many need to bring ear defenders for our next visit.

Yes, we heard that you and Brenda get a bit rowdy when she's had a couple too many. ;)
-
KKOB – I have to tell you that the present Mrs H has taken the strongest possible exception to your post.
As she harshly, but accurately points out it is always, without fail I who have had a couple too many. :( :-[ :( :-[

I was told by our hotel manager that the call to prayer comes via loudspeaker from the central mosque in Fethiye, notbdirectly from the mosque in Calis. It is loud in the quiet of the early morning, around 3am.

Nope the new Calis mosque has its own call to prayer. And its LOUD!!
-
It is very loud the first time I heard it, it was like he was standby at the bottom of the bed singing to me. I used earplugs for a few days after that, but you do get used to it.

Earlier in this thread, I was critical of people who moaned about the call to prayer.
I have to say that was before I had experienced it first hand.
It is exceptional loud - loud enough (just) to be heard up near Violet Apartments.
It would not surprise me that holidaymakers who stay in the area around the mosque for the first time might be put off from paying a returning visit.
Just my opinion.
-
It's also piped to a few loadspeakers in Calis. There is one by the new German bakery we were sat there having coffe when it went off and it was impossible to talk the volume was so high. Wouldn't mind usually but he's a bloody awful singer as well!
-
Wouldnt be to bad if he sang something we knew. 😀😀😀
-
Singing is stretching it a tad isn't it :)
-
You 'um it son, we'll play it ! ;)

I know the tune quite well, but can never remember the lyrics :)
-
-
We too were at the German Bakery enjoying Bratwurst. When the speakers rang into life, we also jumped. The bratwurst was last seen running down the market road. That speaker had a marked stutter. We were told it had been accidentally damaged. They need to do a proper job next time.
-
I recently stayed at the Tugay earlier this month. I arrived in the early hours and didn't realise how close the mosque was. It was a shock to the system on the first night I can tell you! However, after a few nights, efes and a pair of earplugs, it didn't bother me as much. You do get used to it.
-
We are also very close to the mosque and we too got used to it.
It can be worse for noise with certain holidaymakers.
We have had some noisy gits over the years.lol
-
Can anyone recommend the best ear plugs with the highest noise reduction rating please

Get some of these from Boots. https://www.boots.com/boots-muffle-wax-earplugs-5-pairs-10114104
I use them when trying to sleep during the day after a night shift. They stay in and block out nearly all sound.
-
The Turkish woman at the German Bakery is very angry about the volume from the speakers outside there. She says she has complained so many times they just turn it up there. It is so loud you have to wait until it’s over before continuing your conversation. 😢
-
Did I read on poss a fb group that the speaker by the Nevada hotel has been removed?
On my recent trip I defo don’t recall hearing it being really loud early morning, more like the good old days of just hearing it in the distance. :)

Only just seen this - will give them a try before we go

We had a mosque within 25 metres of the riad we stayed in when we visited Marrakesh a few years ago. That had about 3 or 4 speakers on the wall / roof blasting out the call to prayer at all hours. Why not just set watches or put an alarm on mobile phones for the appropriate times as everyone seems to have that capability these days.

I don't about anyone else, but I can't wear any kind of earplug because when I do I can hear myself breathing and that keeps me awake.

IMO is you choose to holiday or own property in Turkey, mosque's are part and parcel of their country. Like any other country, you accept their culture, history and customs. Same when Turkish visit the UK and accept British way of life, the good and the not so good.
