Those that do wear helmets seldom have them fastened... It is just in case they do get stopped by the police...

A few years ago people used to delight in Turkey being relaxed about such things and contrasting it unfavourably with the UK - 'Elf and Safety gone mad, nanny state, and so on. The result of this relaxed approach is that, per 100,000 motor vehicles, Turkey has 7 times the road deaths of the UK (42.4 per 100,000 versus 6.2).

Looking to ride out to Turkey on my bike,I've always worn a helmet even though I started before the law in UK made it compulsory. Well aware of Turkish driving and standard of riding, been fined for speeding while out there paying around £35 which was about as much as the bus driver was fined when he was dancing in the aisle of the bus while travelling at speed on a Turkish motorway try to impress the passengers. Not sure of the link but you should still be able to see it.

In our almost 6 years of living in Turkey, it never ceased to amaze me that, even though the Turkish people absolutely love children , their own, and others, that they still insisted in placing children in the most dangerous positions when in / on , any type of moving vehicle !! Lorraine & I saw a motor bike on the ( 22 metre road ), Fethiye to Calis main road, which had the bike rider ( male ), sitting on a plank of wood about 2 metres long, which was sticking out to his right, with a rather " robust ", lady sitting on the other , outer end of the piece of wood , I kid you not !!  I felt like following them , just to see if they made it, then decided against it !

Is that a development of the traditional full face helmet - the full upper body helmet?
