Think back to Beckford last season. Elbows a guy at a corner and the ref sees it and books him then....... from the BBC......

Leeds CEO Shaun Harvey added: "We feel certain if the match had not been shown live on television and not received a massive amount of publicity thereafter the caution issued by the referee would have been the end of the matter.

"It is this type of inconsistency in disciplinary matters that is frustrating for clubs and confusing for fans."

Sums it up really. Both players totally in the wrong but one gets away with it and the other doesn't.

Beckford was booked at the time and the rules state that retrospective action cannot be taken if the ref deals with the incident and puts it in his report.

This rule was conveniently fiddled with when Beckford was booked for the 'coming together' and then the referee decided he hadn't booked him for this at all (but probably for wearing a Leeds shirt) and thus he was given a 3 match ban for it.

We weren't actually told what the referee booked him for which was rather strange and more than hinted at a stitch up.

So when the FA want to change the rules, they can do.

Noticed the FA have banned all video of the incident. If you try You Tube, you get the Copyright Notice.
I don't think we need to wonder why they have done this, they simply want this issue put to bed and allow Man Utd to dictate what happens for the rest of the season.

Forgetting Man U bashing for a minute. The sad part of all this is that you can bet that across the country, on Sunday, a number of young players in under 11/under 14 matches etc got one of those in the face, as seen on TV. That is where it is shameful for the FA to let it go. We hear about all the "back to grassroots" efforts of the FA yet they show only cowardice when top flight events like this occur.

Where can justice and consistency possibly be achieved from the rules as they are? Can you imagine in life if the same law was applied? A policeman saw a man slapping another on the back and running away. The policeman pursued the attacker and gave him a street caution. Meanwhile, back at the scene of the crime it turns out it wasn't a slap, there was a knife in the attackers hand and the victim is now dead. Because the policeman has dealt with the incident at the time, the caution stands and the man cannot be tried for murder...

Absolute cowardly nonsense.

My understanding of the rule is, if the ref shows a card no further action can be taken, the referee in this case wasn't even looking at the incident and couldnt give a card because he wasn't sure what had happened, therefore retrospective action comes into force.

Man U rules ok!

Darren Fletcher was given a yellow in the champions league semi against Arsenal a couple of seasons ago, everyone in the ground apart from the ref saw he got the ball but he gave a penalty and the yellow mean't fletcher would miss the final. The ref it that match did the same thing thing as Clattenberg saying he made the correct decision at the time, thus meaning nothing could be done about it afterwards.

If they use the technology correctly this situation could be avoided, but it has to work both ways around and taken out of the ref's hands after the game.

He didn't, he was looking in the other direction as the footage shows, he gave a free kick because he suspected something had happened, he's a dimwit refereee.
