Sleeping in this heat
« on: August 01, 2015, 15:07:54 PM »
Having found it very difficult to get off to sleep in the very hot weather I decided to use my large gel pack which is a hot/cold compress  . Put it in the fridge for a couple of hours (not freezer) and the gel stays squidgy and cold for a long time. A cover is provided with it and it is simply wonderful to put on my pillow and sleep on it. Keeps my neck and head really cool so its easier to sleep. Fantastic buy and I got it from Serhat the English speaking  chemist opposite the Migros in Fethiye centrum  It was 10 lira for the large pack and it can also be immersed in hot water or a microwave to be used as a hot compress when needed for pain relief . I decided to buy an extra one to cuddle as August can be unbearable and I hate aircon.

Do any of you expats follow the Mediterranean style of siesta?

We used to close all windows and doors. Put the aircon on fullblast for 10 minutes to bring the temperature down. Switch it off, and then run a fan to keep the air circulating. I remember it hit 55 a few times in Kaya but we still managed to sleep OK.

Didn't bother with siestas then Colwyn, but I do now. It's me age y'know.  ;)

I recall being in Madrid on work during a heatwave in late June. Outside the building was a short driveway with a grassy area dotted with trees on either side. At lunchtime men poured out of the building in their office suits, lay down on the grass under the trees - no blankets, no pillows - and fell asleep. I assumed they had a 2 hour midday break.

I heard the advice of putting bedding in fridge and then putting on the bed to make the bed cool.

Seems like Lottie has already done something similiar (see other post on this heat subject) and she found it very practical.    ;)

What a good idea, thank you - will be off to buy one of these.

No problems getting off to sleep as we cool the room down with the air con beforehand, but one of us generally wakes in the night and needs to pop it on again for a bit. The gel pack might be a good alternative.

Colwyn - I don't deliberately try and have a siesta but I have been known to nod off in the hammock while reading my Kindle on the occasional* afternoon.
