Without doubt one of the great commentators, but also a thoroughly nice and decent man I think.

A sad loss to sport.

I thought about posting this too. How many times do we hear of "The voice of..."?

There's actually only a handful in reality, including Murray Walker, Peter Allis, whispering Ted Lowe, and The voice of rugby, Bill McLaren.

RIP Bill

A very nice tribute from Brian Moore who said

"I am one of the privileged few to have both been commented on and commentated with the late, great Bill McLaren and in both respects it was a pleasure and an honour".

and

"Listening as a boy to the rich brogue that accompanied every rugby international it was beyond my dreams to think that one day it would be applied to me and when it happened I played and replayed Bill's first mention of my name in a Calcutta Cup game. Somehow my first cap felt all the more real for having that voice pronounce that it was so."

I agree what a sad loss.  There is a tribute programme for Bill McLaren on BBC1 on Sunday at 4.30pm.  I think it will be well worth watching.

Yes, a great commentator. Hearing his voice introduce an international would send a tingle of anticipation up my spine when I was young. His memory will linger on.
